Forrest's first goal came after the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick in the 32nd minute. Forrest converted to put UW up 1-0. He then took a long pass from Ely Allen for a breakaway goal and beat Bluejay goalkeeper Matt Allen for his second goal of the match. The junior forward finished off his hat trick in the 74th minute, when he took a feed from George John and snuck the ball into the back of the net for his 16th goal of the season.
The Bluejays appeared to cut the match to a 2-1 score early in the second half when CU knocked a header into the net off of a corner kick. The goal was not allowed however as a foul was whistled on the Jays in the box.
"I don't think we expected it to end like this, this early," said head coach Bob Warming upon concluding his 11th season at Creighton. "We are a proud program and have proud kids who played hard and fully expected to compete for a national title."
CU ended up out-shooting the Huskies 14-12, including a 9-6 edge in the second half. UW goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins stopped all five shots on goal he faced in the match, all of which came in the second half. Matt Allen stopped four shots in net for the Jays in 87 minutes of play, before giving way to senior Nathan Gibson for the final three minutes. Rodrigo Faria and Byron Dacy led the Jays with three shots each, while Andrew Peterson put two shots on goal.
Creighton's 15th straight NCAA tournament ends in the first round for the first time since a 1-0 loss to Massachusetts in 2001. That loss was also the last time the Jays opened the NCAA postseason away from Nebraska.
Six Bluejays played in their final match in the loss. MVC Player of the Year Michael Kraus, first-team all-MVC defender Ryan Junge, second-team all-MVC defender Andrew Peterson, second-team all-MVC defender/midfielder Tony Odorisio, midfielder/forward Jarod Tarver and back-up keeper Nathan Gibson.
"We had a wonderful group of seniors and those are the guys I talked to most after the match," said Warming. "They have been wonderful representatives of Creighton University and Creighton soccer over the past four seasons. You look at what they accomplished in their careers, not many groups of seniors in the country can claim what they can in their careers. I really enjoyed coaching these guys and would have liked about four more weeks with them."
