OMAHA, Neb. - National Player of the Year Candidate Byron Dacy scored his first two goals of the season and added an assist as the Creighton men's soccer team exploded for a season-high six goals in a 6-1 victory over Central Arkansas at a wet Morrison Stadium Wednesday night. The Bluejays improved to 5-3-2 heading into their Missouri Valley Conference opener Saturday night.
After a scoreless first half in which the teams played fairly even, the Bluejays took control of the match with a barrage of attacking plays in the second 45 minutes. Freshman Rodrigo Faria scored his first collegiate goal in the 50th minute to get the scoring started. The Brazilian took a pass from Ryan Junge at the top of the 18-yard box and fired it past the diving UCA (4-6-1) keeper Matt Moore.
Tim Bohnenkamp then bent a corner kick directly into the net at 62:05 for what proved to be the game-winning tally. Just 88 seconds later, Dacy found the back of the net for the first time this season. Dacy knocked a header into the net off a crossing pass from freshman Jeff Thayer in the 64th minute.
A Central Arkansas own goal gave the Jays a 4-0 lead in the 69th minute. The Bluejays kept the attack coming, scoring another in the 74th minute. Freshman Mo Travis pounced on a rebounded shot to score his second goal of the year. Dacy and Junge were each credited with an assist on the play.
UCA's Wade Luethy scored in the 76th minute to wipe out the Bluejays' clean sheet, but Dacy got CU its five-goal lead back in the 88th minute. Dacy sent the ball to sophomore Tim Walters, who dished it back to the Creighton Prep graduate and he concluded the Jays highest-scoring game of the season at 87:45. The 2005 MVC Freshman of the Year played just the second half, but tied his career-high with five points and unloaded six shots, four of which were directed on goal.
The six goals tied a Morrison Stadium record, which was set the last time CU scored six goals at home, against UMKC on Nov. 22, 2003 in the NCAA Tournament. All six goals in each contest were scored after halftime.
CU dominated play, out-shooting UCA 20-7 in the match, including a 14-1 edge in the second half. The Jays managed six corner kicks, while UCA had none.
The Bluejays will look to sustain momentum when they open MVC play with Western Kentucky Saturday. The Jays and Hilltoppers will kick off the Creighton Homecoming match 7 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
