DES MOINES,
“It was a typical Creighton-Drake game with a lot of emotion on both sides,” said head coach Bob Warming after the Bluejays moved to 19-1-6 all-time against the Bulldogs. “Drake's facility always makes it a tough place to play and it was a difficult place on alumni and senior night making the emotions run high for Drake.”
The Bluejays took the lead with Thomas Gjoesund's team-leading sixth goal of the season in the first half. The sophomore took a feed from Andrei Gotsmanov in the 19th minute to put the Bluejays up. Gotmanov now owns the team-lead with 13 points, while all 12 of Gjoesund's points have come on his six goals.
CU held the 1-0 lead at halftime and kept the advantage until Drake's (9-4-4, 2-1-2 MVC) Matt Kuhn scored the equalizer in the 67th minute.
An evenly played match saw the home Bulldogs out-shoot the Bluejays 12-7, including Drake notching the only shot after regulation in the second overtime. CU had scoring chances, with Gotsmanov missing a one-on-one opportunity against Drake keeper Phillip Breuer and Breuer also turned away a one-on-one chance against Tony Schmitz.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Allen established the school record for minutes played, as he has now played 6,081 minutes to surpass the former mark of 5,974 set by Jim Dalla Riva (1981-84). He made seven saves in the draw.
Every Creighton-Drake match since 1999 has been decided by one goal or fewer.
The Bluejays return to action in the regular-season finale next Saturday at
