
Bluejays Shoot Past Wildcats, 69-62, in Women's Basketball

OMAHA, Neb. ? Ally Thrall went 5-for-5 from three-point range in the first half and finished with a game-high 18 points to lead Creighton women's basketball to a 69-62 win over Kansas State Tuesday night at the Civic Auditorium. Sara Cain added a career-best three three-pointers as the Bluejays (6-4) drained a season-high 12 threes in the victory over K-State (5-5).
The Wildcats built a quick nine-point lead by making their first five shots of the game to go up 12-3 just three and a half minutes into play. K-State led 16-8 six minutes in, when the Bluejays put together a 12-2 run to claim their first lead of the game after a Thrall three with 9:15 left in the half. KSU reclaimed the lead and was up 28-26 when Thrall hit another trey to give the Jays a 29-28 edge with under five to play, and CU never trailed again.
The Bluejays led 36-32 at the break, behind Thrall's career-high five three-pointers in the opening half. CU built its lead in the second half behind hot shooting. The Jays made 10 straight field goals between the 16:07 mark and 6:25 mark, pushing ahead by as many as 20, 64-44 with 7:27 left. Kristina Voss pounded her way to three consecutive lay-ups during a 25-10 Bluejay run.
K-State answered with a 16-2 run to make it a two-possession game with just over a minute left, with the Jays still up 66-60. CU made just 3-of-5 free-throws in the final minute to hold off the Big 12 foe for the seven-point win.
Thrall, who scored a career-best 22 against K-State last year, led all players with 18 points. With her 5-for-5 performance from beyond the arc, she is now 11-for-15 (.733) from three-point range in her last three games. Cain, a fellow senior, added 14 by making 3-of-5 three-pointers. Voss finished with 13 points and team-best three steals.
Sam Schuett added a game-high five assists, along with a block and steal for the Jays.
The Bluejays made a season-high 12 three-pointers and shot a season-best 57.1 percent from long range. CU's 51.1 shooting percentage from the floor was also a season-high, as the Jays shot 63.2 percent (12-19) in the second half.
KSU was led by Marlies Gipson's 11 points and eight rebounds, while Kimberly Dietz added six points, five assists, five turnovers and three steals for the Wildcats.
The win snaps CU's nine-game losing streak to Big 12 opponents, including three losses to conference members this year. The Jays had lost four straight to KSU and improve to 4-14 all-time against the Wildcats with their first win over K-State since 1991.
CU returns to the road for its final non-conference game of the season when it plays at Oral Roberts (7-3) on Friday. The Jays and Eagles tip at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
