OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball team continues preparation for this weekend's trip to Calgary, where it will play five exhibition games in three days over the extended Labor Day holiday.
Last week head coach Dana Altman's team began conducting the first of 10 practices that are allowed before the team departs this Friday afternoon for Canada. CU's first game will be at 12 noon (Central) on Saturday against the University of Saskatchewan. The Huskies, led by All-Canadian Andrew Spagrud, return all five starters from their 2006-07 team that went 13-9 in conference play and defeated Alberta for the division title.
Creighton's second game on Saturday will be against the host University of Calgary at 8 pm (Central). The Dinos were 11-13 last year, but bring in a highly-regarded recruiting class that includes Canadian Junior National Team member Tyler Fidler and Henry Bekkering, a former player at Eastern Washington who was also a 2007 selection in the CFL Draft.
On Sunday, Creighton will face off against the University of Lethbridge at 2 pm (Central). The Pronghorns were 6-16 last year but return just three players from last year's squad.
CU will have a rematch with Saskatchewan at 9 pm on Sunday before closing the trip at 1 pm with a rematch against Calgary.
Creighton will take 14 players to Canada, eight of whom have never suited up for Creighton in game action. A ninth player, Kenny Lawson Jr., played in just two regular-season games before taking a medical redshirt. Creighton's returners who played on last year's MVC Tournament champion squad include seniors Nick Bahe, Pierce Hibma and Dane Watts, as well as juniors Josh Dotzler and Dustin Sitzmann. The Jays, however, lost senior starters Nate Funk, Nick Porter and Anthony Tolliver and will be looking to replace more than 75 percent of its scoring and more than 65 percent of its rebounding from last year's 22-11 team.
According to information provided by the University of Calgary, the teams will play using FIBA rules in advance of CIS's national move away from NCAA rules in 2007-08. Key differences include four 10-minute quarters rather than 20-minute halves, a 24-second shot clock, and more limited timeout opportunities.
All games will be played at the Jack Simpson Gym in Calgary, with tickets $10 each available for purchase by calling 403-220-DINO. Below is CU's game schedule in Calgary, with all times Central:
Saturday, Sept. 1
Creighton vs. Saskatchewan (12 pm)
Creighton at Calgary (8 pm)
Sunday, Sept. 2
Creighton vs. Lethbridge (2 pm)
Creighton vs. Saskatchewan (9 pm)

The games are not slated to have live video, live audio or live stats, but full statistics will be kept for all games. Recaps and box scores will be posted nightly on Creighton's website at www.gocreighton.com.
