
Volleyball Trims Trees To Match Best League Start Ever

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton volleyball team matched its best conference start in school history with an easy 3-0 victory over Indiana State on Saturday night in Omaha. Scores of the match were 30-14, 30-15, 30-18. CU is now 11-5 overall and 5-0 in MVC play. Indiana State fell to 3-11, 0-6 MVC.
Helping to cheer on the Bluejays were 1,325 fans, the volleyball program's most-ever at the Omaha Civic Auditorium and third-largest home crowd in program history.
Creighton hit a season-best .382 in the romp, notching 52 kills in just 102 swings against 13 errors. CU also served up a nine aces, including five from junior Carolyn Decker.
All 13 players in uniform for CU played at least two games. The Sycamores used 14 players, but were unable to keep up. The Jays trailed just twice all night against the Sycamores, falling behind 1-0 to start both games one and three.
In game one, CU broke free from a 13-11 score with a 11-1 run with Allie Oelke and Katie Mehal serving. In the second game, Mehal served eight straight points to give CU an early 12-3 lead. The third game including a 14-4 run from the Jays as they built up a 22-10 lead. An ace from Lauren Bloemke ended the match.
Kelly Goc led Creighton with 13 kills, while Decker served a season-high five aces. Oelke turned in yet another double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs while hitting .471. Also notable was the 20-dig effort from libero Bianca Rivera, who extended her school record with her fifth straight match of 20 or more digs.
ISU was paced by eight kills from Kristen Kerscher. The Sycamores managed just 23 kills, two aces, 33 digs and three blocks in the match.
Creighton returns to action on Friday with a match at Evansville. First serve is set for 7 pm.
