CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Jessica Houts had 15 kills, nine digs and five
blocks to lead the Creighton volleyball team to an impressive 3-0 sweep
of SEC power Tennessee on Friday afternoon at the State Farm Illini
Classic. Scores of the match were 30-25, 30-24, 30-22.
Creighton (4-3) advances to the championship match of the event, where it will face Illinois (5-2) at 3 pm. Tennessee (4-2) will play in the consolation final against the Marquette (2-4) loser at Noon. Illinois defeated Marquette, 30-24, 30-22, 30-25. CLICK HERE FOR LIVE STATS of SATURDAY'S FINAL.
“I thought we played the way that we are capable of playing,” said CU head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth in a post-match interview on KVSS. “I thought Jess (Houts) played great front row today and that her back-row attack was especially good.”
After taking an early 9-8 lead in game one, Creighton would not trail the rest of the night. Games one and two followed similar paths. The Jays took a 19-14 lead midway through game one, had to hang on as Tennessee closed to within 26-25, and scored the last four points of game one to take an early 1-0 lead.
In game two, Creighton led 20-14 before Tennessee closed to within 21-20. A 7-0 run by the Bluejays stretched out the lead, which CU eventually won 30-24.
Creighton took an early 13-8 lead in game three and maintained a lead of three or more the rest of the way.
“We've got to seize opportunities with our schedule,” said Booth. “I was really proud of the way we came out. We had come out slow the past couple matches. We came out with the goal of being the first to 10. We were the first to 10 all three games tonight which tells me that we came out ready to go.”
Houts was the lone Bluejay with 10 or more kills, finishing with a season-high 15 putaways. Eight of her kills came in 11 game three swings. She also led CU with .394 hitting and five blocks, while her nine digs were second on the team to Bianca Rivera's 22 digs. The Jays finished with 45 kills, two aces, 54 digs and 11.5 blocks while hitting .184.
Tennessee was plagued by 30 attack errors and eight more serving miscues. Leah Hinkey had a match-high 16 kills, but only three of those were in game three. The Lady Vols finished with 40 kills, three aces, 63 digs and nine blocks but hit just .075.
