OMAHA, Neb. ? Sophomore Sam Schuett posted her second double-double of the year with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to lead the Creighton women's basketball team past Northern Iowa, 71-63, Thursday night at the Civic Auditorium. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for Creighton and moved the Jays to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
UNI (6-11, 2-4 MVC) scored the first basket of the game and led 6-5 before the Bluejays scored the game's next 11 points to take control of the game. CU led by as many as 16 in the first half and carried a 36-22 lead into halftime. The Jays out-worked UNI on the glass 24-17 in the opening half and owned an 8-0 edge in second-chance points during that span.
The Panthers scored the first six points of the second half to draw within eight, with CU ahead 36-28. After exchanging baskets, the Jays scored nine straight points to claim their largest lead of the night, up 47-30 with 15 minutes remaining in the game. But the pesky Panthers, led by CU Athletics Hall of Famer Tanya Warren, stayed in the game and got within eight, down 61-53 with 4:23 to play. But the Bluejays responded to go back up by 15 and a late surge by UNI was aided by missed CU free-throws to make the final margin 71-63.
Schuett scored in double figures for the first time since Dec. 5, leading the Jays with 18 off the bench. She chipped in a career-best 13 boards, including 10 on the defensive end, for her fifth career double-dime. The sophomore led four Bluejays in double figures.
Kelsey Woodard added 12 points and a pair of steals, while going 4-for-4 at the free-throw line for the third straight game. Kristina Voss added 11 points, including a 5-for-5 performance at the free-throw line. Ally Thrall finished with 10 points, making 3-of-6 three-pointers.
Kelsey Crites came off the CU bench to lead the team with a career-high six assists in just 13 minutes of play.
Three Panthers reached double figures, led by senior Traci Ollendieck's 19 points. Ollendieck added a team-best nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. Jacqui Kalin had 16 points and Lizzie Boeck added 10 for the Panthers.
The Bluejays return to action on Saturday when they play host to Bradley (7-10, 1-5 MVC). The Jays and Braves will tip off at 4:05 p.m. at the Civic on Saturday. The game can be heard live on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
