
Women's Basketball Runs Past Rams 67-56

OMAHA, Neb. ? Megan Neuvirth posted her second straight double-double with a game-high 18 points and 14 rebounds, as the Creighton women's basketball team cruised to a 67-56 win over Colorado State Sunday afternoon at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Neuvirth also came within one blocked shot of the school record, swatting six in the win, helping the Jays improve to 4-6 on the season.
Colorado State (3-7) gave the Bluejays a fight in the first half, as the teams exchanged the lead nine times in the opening 20 minutes. The largest lead the Rams owned was an 11-7 edge early in the game. Creighton's largest lead of the opening half was its 39-31 halftime lead.
The Jays ran away with the game in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring the first 11 points after halftime to push ahead 50-31 less than four minutes in. The Rams put together a 7-0 burst to get within 12, only to see the Jays go back up by 18 with less than five minutes to play. The Jays led 67-49 before the Rams closed the game with the final seven points to make the final margin 11.
For Neuvirth, her six blocked shots were a career-high and the most by a Bluejay since Amy Hoffman blocked six at Oregon State on Dec. 2, 2004. Kris Kugel owns the CU record for blocks in a game, with seven on Dec. 20, 1991. In addition to her fourth double-double of the season and six swats, Neuvirth also led the team with five assists and three steals.
Three other Bluejays scored in double figures, led by Chevelle Herring's 14. Herring also tied Neuvirth for team-high honors with five assists. Kelsey Woodard chipped in 10 and Kristina Voss came off the bench to score 10 points in 13 minutes of play, while extending her consecutive free-throw streak to 18.
CU out-rebounded the Rams 43-42 and converted 19 CSU turnovers into 17 points.
Kim Mestdagh led the Rams with 15 points off the bench.
Creighton will now take time off for Christmas before finishing non-conference play at North Dakota State on Dec. 29. The Jays will then head from North Dakota to Illinois State to open Missouri Valley Conference play on Jan. 1.
NOTES: Walk-on Michaela Kraft, who joined the team after two Bluejay season-ending injuries, played four minutes in her collegiate debut Sunday. She missed a three-pointer in her first touch of the ball ... Amy Hoffman, the last Bluejay to block six shots in a game, was in attendance Sunday ... Through 10 games, Neuvirth already has a career-high 17 blocked shots on the season.
