OMAHA, Neb. - Jonas Dufek threw a complete game shutout, and T.J. Roemmich hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season as the Creighton baseball team, defeated Southern Illinois, 10-0, in a run-ruled shortened seven inning contest, Sunday at the CU Sports Complex.
Creighton got a big lead in the second inning as Jimmy Swift led off with a home run to right field. After back-to-back singles by Carson Vitale and Nick Becker, Robbie Knight reached on a fielder's choice putting runners at first and third with two outs. Elliot Soto then used a hit-and-run to bring in Vitale, as Knight advanced to third. Darin Ruf then hit what should have been an inning-ending ground ball to short but Michael Stalter misplayed it, allowing Knight to score. Vicente Cafaro then brought in the last two runs of the inning, as he tripled into the right field corner, making it 5-0 Bluejays at the end of two. In the inning, CU brought nine men to the plate, and had five hits, to go with their five runs.
In the third, the Bluejays got three hits in a row by Dike, Vitale and Becker to load the bases. Knight then drew a bases loaded walk, bringing home Dike.
In the seventh, Roemmich led off the inning with a home run. The Jays then loaded the bases as Swift, Dike and Vitale all reached base with no outs. After Becker struck out, Knight singled to center, bringing in Swift and Dike. Soto then ended the game as he hit a single to center bringing home Vitale.
On the mound Dufek was flawless, as he threw seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits on one walk, and he struck out four. It was the first complete game of his career, as well as the first of the season for the Bluejays.
