TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Kenny Lawson Jr. had 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for his second career double-double, but it wasn't enough as Indiana State defeated Creighton, 70-64, in men's basketball action on Friday in Terre Haute.
Creighton is now 5-8 on the season (0-2 MVC), while Indiana State moves to 9-4 (1-1 MVC).
Indiana State went into the locker room with a 34-27 lead, including a buzzer-beater by Rashad Reed. Reed had nine first half points to lead all players. Neither team shot well in the first 20 minutes, as CU was at 35.7 percent and ISU at 40.7 percent.
Creighton came out with a second half charge, making 6-of-9 shots from the floor, to even the score at 41 in the opening four minutes. Kenny Lawson Jr. scored inside and after CU stole the inbounds pass, Antoine Young would hit an elbow jumper. A short time later a three-pointer by P'Allen Stinnett cut the deficit to three, and Andrew Bock would follow with an old-fashioned three-point play to knot the score at 41-all.
Creighton would have a shot to go ahead 43-42, but Stinnett would leave his eight-footer short. ISU's Jordan Printy then answered with a deep three-pointer to return ISU's lead to four, and CU would get no closer the rest of the afternoon.
The Jays would later get back within four points at 61-57 and go to the line, only to see Stinnett finally cool down and miss both free throw attempts. Reed would answer for ISU to push the lead to six and Young would miss a pair of free throws while shooting for an injured Carter.
The Jays would get witin four points one final time with 32.0 seconds left, as Cavel Witter sank two at the line to make it 67-63. However ISU's Dwayne Lathan sank two on the other end and CU would wind up on the short end of a 70-64 decision.
Stinnett made 8-of-13 shots and scored 19 points to lead CU, while Lawson had 13 points and 14 boards for his second double-double of the season. Creighton shot 37.5 percent for the game at 21-for-56. One season after blistering the Hulman Center nets for 15-of-24 shooting from long-distance, CU hit just 3-of-19 from three-point range to finish at 15.8 percent from deep. Creighton outrebounded ISU 38-36.
ISU had three men in double-figures, led by 18 from Reed and 13 from Lathan. Harry Marshall had 10 points and seven rebounds as well, starting in place of injured Sycamore Jake Kelly. ISU shot 37.7 percent for the game and 5-of-20 from deep, but did make 25-of-34 shots from the line.
Creighton will remain on the road and bus to Evansville, where it plays the Purple Aces Sunday at 2:05 pm. That game can be heard on KXSP (Big Sports 590 AM) and will not be televised.
