ORLANDO, Fla. - The Creighton men's tennis team opened its spring break trip to Orlando in fine fashion, as the Jays pulled out several tough matches en route to a 6-1 win over Valparaiso, Sunday afternoon at Star Island.
"We got a big win at No. 3 doubles to give us momentum," said head coach Tom Lilly. "It [dual] wasn't a 6-1 type of dual, it had the feeling of a 4-3 match," Lilly added.
The Creighton (3-2) win at No. 3 doubles was provided by Connor Macey and Ryan Norman. They eked out a 9-7 win over Kyle Stump and Arne Deihle, to clinch the doubles point after CU and Valpo (1-5) split the first two.
The Jays (3-2) rode the momentum from that win to take five of the six singles matches. Three of the six matches went to a third set, the most of any Creighton dual thus far.
Singles started with CU and Valpo each winning one dual. Billy Paluch topped Adam Whitmer at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph, but Valpo answered with Chris Baum taking down Kyle Obermeier, 6-4, 6-1.
The Jays then pulled ahead 3-1 with a J.T. Christian win over Stump at No. 2. That set up the final three sets; all going to a tie-breaking third set.
Creighton clinched the match with Bryan Lube's 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over Kevin DeHerrera at No. 6. The Jays rounded out the dual with two more wins; the first from Gaby Nagy at No. 3 (3-6, 6-4, 10-2) and the final blow coming from McAvoy at No. 5 (6-4, 3-6, 10-7).
The Jays resume play tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. against Monmouth.
