OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore Greg Jordan headed in a pair of goals on set pieces from sophomore Jose Gomez while junior goalkeeper Brian Holt stopped a first-half penalty kick to help keep the 24th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team unbeaten and unscored upon through four matches in 2010. The Bluejays improved to 4-0-0 with their fourth consecutive shutout, topping DePaul 2-0 on Saturday night in front of 2,603 fans at Morrison Stadium.
Jordan and Gomez hooked up for the first score less than two minutes into the match. After DePaul was whistled for a foul, Gomez took the free kick, sending it to the far post from 35 yards out. Jordan knocked in the perfect serve from Gomez for his first goal of the season just with just 102 seconds elapsed on the game clock.
DePaul (1-2-1) nearly snapped Creighton's shutout streak in the first half, when the Bluejays were whistled for a foul on a Blue Demon corner kick. The Blue Demons knocked the ball into the back of the net on the corner kick, but the foul was called before the shot attempt. DePaul's Willy Lara stepped up to take the penalty kick, only to be denied by a diving save from Holt. The Lara shot proved to be the only DePaul shot on goal in the contest.
After taking a 1-0 lead in a fairly evenly played first half, the Bluejays came out of the locker room dominating possession and the pace of the match in the second half.
Jordan, who had one career goal entering the match, scored his second of the contest on another perfectly placed ball from Gomez. The second score came off of a corner kick in the 62nd minute, as Gomez put the ball on the head of Jordan who drove the ball into the ground and past a diving Joe Ferrari in goal for DePaul.
Gomez now has five assists in four matches as a Bluejay, equalling his freshman total at Cal State Fullerton in 2008. His five helpers are already as many as the Bluejay leader in assists (Josh Moran) had the entire 2009 season. The sophomore transfer has recorded at least one point in every contest this season for the Jays.
Creighton is off to its best start since 2000. The 2000 squad won six straight to open the season en route to leading the NCAA with 22 wins and finishing as NCAA Tournament runners-up. CU has opened the season with four straight shutouts for just the second time in school history, equalling the feat first accomplished by the 1999 team.
The Bluejays return to action on Friday when they travel to Peoria, Ill., to take part in the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic hosted by MVC foe Bradley. The Jays take on longtime Midwest region rival SMU Friday at 5 p.m., and then the Ivy League's Dartmouth on Sunday at noon.
