SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Heath Melugin's goal in the 23rd minute was enough for Missouri State as the Bears upset the No. 4-ranked Creighton men's soccer team in the Bluejays' Missouri Valley Conference opener Wednesday night at Plaster Field. The win was MSU's second in as many Valley games, while it served as just the second loss for Creighton on the season.
Creighton's first regular-season road loss in MVC play since 2006 drops the Bluejays to 10-2-0 on the season. The Bears improved to 4-5-2 on the year, including 4-1-1 in their last six matches, and 2-0-0 in Valley action.
Melugin took advantage of a rare defensive lapse by the Bluejays midway through the first half. The Creighton defense entered the match ranked second in the NCAA in goals against average, shutout percentage and save percentage, but a breakdown by the defense allowed the Missouri State midfielder to chip a shot over Brian Holt in goal for what proved to be the only goal of the match in the 23rd minute.
Creighton's first shot of the night was directed on goal by Ethan Finlay in the sixth minute, but MSU's Trevor Spangenberg stopped the shot by the CU All-American. Creighton would put only one more shot on goal on the night, a header by Greg Jordan on a corner kick at the 58:00 mark.
Holt would make four saves in the loss. He and the Bluejay defense have allowed only three goals through 12 matches, but both losses the Jays have suffered this year have been 1-0 finals.
The Bluejays, who have not won in Sprinfield since 2002, dropped to 0-2-3 in their last five matches on MSU's home pitch. The loss was CU's first on the MVC road in the regular-season since falling at Bradley in the 2006 regular-season finale. CU had been 8-0-6 on the road in conference play since that loss to Bradley.
Creighton returns home following its longest road trip of the season (2-2-0) on Saturday when it plays host to No. 7 UC Irvine. The Bluejays and Anteaters will kick off at 7:30 pm at Morrison Stadium in the top-10 showdown. The Jays then head back out on the road for its next two MVC matches next week.
