FARGO, N.D. - Junior Ally Jensen and freshman Alexis Akin-Otiko tied for game-high honors with 16 points and sophomore Sarah Nelson recorded her second career double-double to help the Creighton women's basketball team to a 71-51 win at North Dakota State Sunday afternoon. The Bluejays are now 2-0 on the season, winning their first two road games of the year for the first time since 1995.
Creighton found itself down 10-2 to the Bison (0-2) six minutes into the game and the Bluejays had scored just eight points 10 minutes into the game, before kicking their offense into gear to close out the first half.
Down 18-14, the Bluejays would score 11 straight points, including the final six points of the run by Nelson to put the Jays ahead 25-18 with 3:29 left in the half. The Bluejays would build to an eight point lead when Jensen hit her second three-pointer of the game to make the score 28-20 in favor of the Jays. NDSU would score the final four points of the half to make the halftime score 28-24.
Creighton pulled away from the Bison in the second half, grabbing its first double-digit lead of the game on an Akin-Otiko jumper four minutes into the half to give it a 39-29 lead. That jumper was part of a 9-0 run which would push the Jays ahead by 15 eventually.
NDSU struggled on offense throughout the second half, making only 5-of-25 field goal attempts after halftime. Creighton led by as much as 23 points in the blowout road win, shooting 54.5 percent from the field (18-33) in the second half to distance itself from the Bison.
Jensen finished with her second double-digit scoring game in as many games this year, after she scored in double figures four times all of last year. The junior made 4-of-7 three-pointers and finished with 16 points and three assists. Akin-Otiko made 7-of-9 shot from the floor and added six rebounds to her 16 points in 16 minutes off the bench.
Nelson, who also recorded a double-double in CU's second game last year, led all players with 10 rebounds and finished with 12 points and a game-high four assists for the Bluejays.
Kahla Becken was the only Bison to score in double figures, coming off the bench to score 14 points in 19 minutes. NDSU shot 28.3 percent from the field in the game, including 2-of-12 (.167) from three-point range. The Jays finished at 44.4 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent (7-21) from long range, while making 8-of-9 free throws in the win.
CU outrebounded NDSU 43-33 and grabbed 10 steals in the win, led by McKenzie Fujan's three swipes.
Creighton will look for its first 3-0 start since 1992 when it plays at Kansas (1-0) on Wednesday at 8 pm. That game will be the first regular-season game aired on KOIL AM 1180.
