OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Volleyball team won its second straight match on Saturday afternoon, a 3-0 sweep over Bowling Green at the Bluejay Invitational.
Scores in favor of CU were 25-17, 25-18, 25-15.
Creighton improved to 5-3 on the year, while Bowling Green is now 2-6.
The win sets up a showdown for the Bluejay Invitational title at 7:30 pm tonight when Creighton hosts old Valley rival Wichita State. Both teams are 2-0 in the event after WSU topped Pepperdine in the first match of the morning in four sets (22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22).
Kelli Browning led a balanced Bluejay attack with eight kills, but the story of the match was senior classmate Kate Neisler. Playing exclusively in the back row, Neisler delivered seven kills on .583 hitting, both career-highs. She also added a season-best two aces.
Neisler led CU in the first set with four kills in five swings, including consecutive putaways to get the Jays to set point of an eventual 25-17 victory.
Creighton held BGSU to -.031 hitting in the second frame of a 25-18 win. Setter Maggie Baumert had nine assists in addition to three kills, while Melanie Jereb keyed the defense with five digs.
With the score knotted at 4-all in the third set, Browning served consecutive aces to give CU a 6-4 lead. After a sideout, Ashley Jansen was credited with a back row kill after Bowling Green coach Danijela Tomic asked the referees to overturn a call that had gone in BG's favor. Jansen's swing was ruled long, but Tomic honorably told the officials that there was a touch, giving CU the point, and starting a 6-1 run for the Jays that put them comfortably ahead.
CU cruised from there, getting kills from eight different women in the final frame, including the first of Toni Tupper's college career. CU also served five aces in the third set to finish with more aces (7) than service errors (6) for the first time all fall.
Jereb topped all players with 12 digs, while Browning had a match-best three aces. CU finished with 41 kills, 41 digs and 6.0 blocks on .270 hitting.
BGSU was led by eight kills by Paige O'Connor and 10 digs by libero Madeline Garda. The Falcons had 25 kills, two aces, 40 digs and 6.0 blocks on .067 hitting.
Tonight's Creighton-Wichita State match will be televised in Omaha on Cox 122, and preceded by Pepperdine vs. Bowling Green at 5:30 pm.
NOTES: Kate Elman's streak of 30 straight matches with double-figure digs was snapped as she was held to eight digs. The streak was the third-longest in CU history ... Katie Neisler's seven kills were nearly as many as her sophomore (3) and junior (5) season kill totals combined ... Creighton will seek its first Bluejay Invitational title tonight. This year is the 10th edition of the event.
