Creighton sets CenturyLink Center Omaha records for fewest points allowed and best field goal percentage defense
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball team set a pair of defensive CenturyLink Center Omaha records on Friday in an 87-36 win over visiting Maryland Eastern Shore.
Creighton improved to 8-2 on the year, while Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 3-9.
The 36 points allowed by Creighton were the fewest allowed by any team in the 266 game history of CenturyLink Center Omaha, besting the previous low of 40 allowed by Creighton against Alcorn State (11/15/04) and Samford (12/22/10). It was the fewest points allowed by Creighton in a game at any site since Jan .13, 1986, when it allowed 35 to Illinois State. In addition, Maryland Eastern Shore's 23.6 percent shooting was also the lowest mark in facility history, surpassing the previous low of 24.1 percent (14-58) by Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 29, 2006.
Creighton blitzed to a 13-0 run in the game's opening minutes, as Khyri Thomas had four points and three assists to lead the hot start. The lead grew to 28 by halftime (45-17), tied for CU's fifth-largest halftime lead in facility history. Marcus Foster led CU with 12 points in the first half, while Thomas had 10 points by intermission.
The Bluejays didn't let up after intermission, opening the second stanza on a 9-0 run. A three-pointer with 59.4 seconds left by Tyler Clement closed the scoring with CU posting a 87-36 triumph, tied for the seventh-largest victory margin in school history.
Five Bluejays scored in double-figures, led by 15 from Foster, 12 each by Thomas and Ty-Shon Alexander, 11 by Martin Krampelj and a season-high 10 by Manny Suarez. Ronnie Harrell Jr. had 10 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench, adding four assists. All 12 Bluejays in uniform scored at least three points, as CU's bench outscored the Hawks bench 41-15. CU also owned a 28-0 lead in points off turnovers and a 21-2 edge in fast break points. Creighton shot 52.4 percent overall and had 21 assists against a season-low four turnovers.
Logan McIntosh had 13 points for UMES. Miryne Thomas, who entered the game leading the Hawks with 11.3 points per game, came off the bench and finished with two points on 1-of-11 shooting. The Hawks did make all five free throw attempts, but had five assists against 14 turnovers for the evening.
Creighton hosts UT Arlington on Monday at 8 pm in a game that will air nationally on FS1 and can be heard locally on 1620 AM (KOZN).
