Volleyball Hammers Belmont Behind Balanced Effort

Creighton's .446 hitting percentage is fourth-best for a match in program history
LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The No. 9 Creighton Volleyball team rebounded from a loss to No. 17 Purdue with a resounding 3-0 win over Belmont on Friday evening in Lawrence at the Kansas Invitational. The Bluejays hit .446 in the match, the fourth-best mark in program history and best performance in a non-conference match since 2005.
Scores of the match were 25-10, 25-10, 25-19.
Creighton improved to 6-2 on the season while Belmont dropped to 5-5 with its third loss this week against a ranked foe.
Creighton didn't waste any time overcoming its first match of the day, overpowering a small Belmont team with a 25-10 win in the opening set. The teams traded nine straight sideouts to start the match and were even at 6-6 before a 19-4 Bluejay run. Creighton hit .400 and served two aces while holding the Bruins to four kills and -.077 hitting in the opener.
The second set wasn't much closer. The Bluejays broke free from a 4-4 tie with a 13-2 bulge to push their lead into double-figures. Kelsey O'Connell provided a spark off the bench with two kills, two blocks and an ace in a 25-10 win that saw Creighton hit .471 and keep the Bruins to -.125 hitting with just four kills.
Creighton never trailed in the final set, pulling away after the Bruins stayed close early. A kill from Lawrence native Naomi Hickman closed out the contest.
Taryn Kloth hit .733 and finished with 11 kills on 15 errorless swings to pace the Bluejay offense, while Samantha Bohnet topped the defense with 11 digs. Bohnet also led the Bluejays behind the service line with two of the team's six service winners. Creighton finished with 38 kills in 74 swings, hitting .446, and added 39 digs and eight blocks.
Belmont was led by seven kills by Jessica Vestal. The Bruins hit .190 in the final set and .033 for the contest. Belmont finished with 23 kills, one ace, 28 digs and two blocks.
Creighton closes play at the Kansas Invitational on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. when it takes on No. 6 Kansas. That match will be aired on ESPN3.
