OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team grabbed a hard-fought 4-3 victory against Nebraska-Omaha on Thursday night at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center. The win marked the Bluejays' first of the 2018 dual season.
The Bluejays came out strong, securing the doubles point with a sweep in doubles action. The duo of Daniel Lopez-Rey and Mac Mease won 6-3 in the No. 2 spot, while Brooks Kendall and Armando Gandini won 6-4 in the No. 3 spot to clinch the point for the Jays.
Following a loss at the No. 2 spot in singles action, Creighton took back-to-back victories as Jose Oscar Diaz won in the No. 6 spot 6-2, 6-4 and Alex Koca overcame a 1-0 deficit in a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory to give the Bluejays a 3-1 team lead.
Singles play continued to go to three sets, with the Mavericks taking points in both the No.1 and No. 3 spots. At No. 5, Lopez-Rey took the first set 6-2 before falling just short in the second, 6-7 (7-9 in tiebreaker). Lopez-Rey rebounded to take the third set 6-2, and secured the team win for Creighton, 4-3.
"Our doubles was really good tonight, and I hope we can build on that," head coach Tom Lilly said. "UNO has a very good team and we had to play very well. Our guys fought hard the entire match and we had a few really step up and win some huge points."
"Alex won his 100th and 101st matches tonight. It was a very good team win."
Creighton returns to the court on Feb. 9 at home against UMKC. Doubles match play will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Courts.
