A 7-0 win sees Creighton finish 4-0 in Orlando
ORLANDO, Fla. -- During its last match in Florida, the Creighton men's tennis team picked up another sweep and finished the trip 4-0, as the Bluejays defeated Hampton 7-0 on Thursday afternoon.
Winning its fourth straight contest, Creighton moved to 6-8 on the season as they wrapped up a four-match week in Orlando, Florida.
Alex Koca and Stratton Brown started the day off with a doubles victory in the No. 1 spot, taking the set 6-3. A Hampton 6-4 response at the No. 2 spot created a winner-take-all scenario in the No. 3 spot to take doubles points. Armando Gandini and Brooks Kendall answered the call, with a 7-5 victory to give Creighton an edge going into singles.
Jose Oscar Diaz kept the initial momentum rolling for the Bluejays, as a 6-0, 6-3 result at the No. 6 extended the Creighton lead. A 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 4 by Koca put Creighton in a position to clinch with its next singles point. The Bluejays soon received the match point, as Kendall (No. 1) closed the victory out with a 6-4, 7-5 win. Gandini needed only two sets to get a result, a 7-5, 6-1 decision and gave Creighton a 5-0 scoreline as two Bluejays were yet to finish. Brown and Daniel Lopez both fought off first set losses to take matches into a tiebreaker third set, as both were able to earn the sweep for Creighton with 4-6, 6-4 (10-4) and 5-7, 7-5 (14-12) scores, respectively.
"This was a tough match and we had to come up with some big points in doubles and singles," head coach Tom Lilly said. "It was a great way to end the week with each starter getting a singles win today against a spirited Hampton team."
The Bluejays return to the courts March 27 when they host Air Force. Doubles action is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m.
