Bluejays earned wins at the No. 3-5 singles positions
CHICAGO -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 4-3 to DePaul during a BIG EAST battle on Friday night at the Lakeshore Sport and Fitness Center in Chicago.
The Bluejays fell to 1-3 on the season, while the Blue Demons improved to 3-2.
Creighton opened the match with 6-4 win at the top doubles position by Stratton Brown and Mac Mease. Host DePaul responded by winning the second and third position doubles matches, including in a tiebreaker during the No. 3 slot, to secure the doubles point.
Armando Gandini leveled the score with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory during the No. 3 singles match before DePaul earned straight-sets victories at the second and sixth slots to take a 3-1 lead.
Daniel Lopez-Rey won in straight-sets at the No. 5 position to pull the Bluejays within one point.
During the top singles match, Nick Campbell dropped the opening set 6-3, but forced a deciding third set with a 6-4 win in the second frame. DePaul's Boris Spanjaard secured the overall match with a 6-3 win in the final set to give the Blue Demons their fourth point of the night.
Jose Oscar Diaz closed the night with a come-from-behind three-set victory at No. 4 to pull the final margin to a single point.
"We played really well at times today in front of a tough crowd in Chicago," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We just didn't win enough of the big points at a few positions and DePaul played well.
"Hopefully we can continue to improve and capitalize more. We don't have time to dwell on this loss as we play in about 14 hours against a strong Northern Illinois team."
The Bluejays return to the courts on Saturday afternoon in Rockford, Illinois to face off against Northern Illinois at noon.
