Sophomore Eleanor Hudepohl won her first collegiate title on Tuesday
OMAHA, Neb. -- Sophomore Eleanor Hudepohl picked up her first collegiate title and the Creighton women's golf team placed second at the Big O Classic, which concluded Tuesday at Oak Hills Country Club in Omaha.
Creighton (307-303-318=928) took a three-shot lead into the final round and led until the final holes before Wichita State (302-311-313=926) escaped with a narrow two-shot victory to win the team title among the field of nine teams. Omaha (308-311-315=934) finished in third place, six shots behind the Bluejays.
Playing as an individual, Hudepohl (70-74-75=219) brought home medalist honors with a two-shot victory over St. Thomas junior Courtney Wedin (71-79-71=221). The Bluejay sophomore was part of the first group to tee off the back nine and promptly birdied No. 11, 12, 16, 18 and 2 to build a lead as large as eight strokes at one point. Hudepohl played at least one shot from the sand in each of her final four holes to close her round with a 2-over 75, then had to wait more than an hour for Wedin to finish before she could finally exhale. The Cincinnati product, who took second at the Creighton Classic last fall at Oak Hills Country Club, now leads Creighton with a 74.78 scoring average this fall.
Hudepohl was one of four Bluejays with a top-11 finish. Gabby Tremblay (73-75-80=228) closed with an 80 on Tuesday to finish tied for fourth place, her best finish since tying for second place at the 2021 BIG EAST Conference Championships. Freshman Annika Yturralde (77-74-79=230) tied for sixth place, her first career top-10 finish. Katherine Lemke (80-78-76=234), who won the 2021 Creighton Classic at Oak Hills, improved her score each round and closed with a 76 to tie for 11th place.
Rounding out CU's team score were Katie Allen (77-76-84=237) and Mia Gaboriau (80-78-83=241). Allen tied for 18th place while Gaboriau tied for 27th in the field.
Joining Hudepohl as an individual and not factoring in CU's team score were Katie Berrian (76-82-77=235) and Claire Orcutt (82-86-88=256). Berrian's tie for 14th place matched the best finish of her career, while Orcutt shaved eight shots off her score from her outbound nine on Tuesday.
The tournament featured 58 competitors overall on the Par 73 course that measured 5,952 yards.
The Bluejays close the fall season next Monday at Tuesday at the Loyola Fall Invitational on Oct. 10-11 in Libertyville, Ill.
