Bluejays head to Las Vegas for two games next weekend
OMAHA, Neb. -- Nebraska won a regular-season game at Creighton for the first time since 1995 with a 63-53 victory over the seventh-ranked Bluejays on Sunday afternoon before a sellout crowd of 17,352 at CHI Health Center Omaha.
Derrick Walker (22) and Sam Griesel (18) combined for 40 points for Nebraska (6-3), helping to offset a season-high 16 points from Bluejay guard Francisco Farabello. Ryan Kalkbrenner (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Baylor Scheierman (10 points, 11 rebounds) both posted double-doubles for Creighton (6-3), which lost its third straight after a 6-0 start.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Trey Alexander and Scheierman gave Creighton a 12-8 lead after six minutes,, but that would end up being CU's largest lead of the afternoon. Nebraska took the lead for good at 21-20 on a Griesel three-pointer and led 25-23 at the break.
Walker and Griesel scored all the points in a 6-0 Cornhusker run to open the second half. CU's lone fast break points of the day got CU within one at 31-30 with 13:19 to play, but NU responded with an 11-3 run that included six Griesel points to build a 42-33 lead.
A four-point play by Farabello got CU within five at 44-39 with 6:31 remaining, but Griesel's dunk plus free throw stemmed the hosts' momentum and CU would not get any closer than six the rest of the way.
Griesel finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists while Walker made 11-of-16 field goal attempts and recorded 22 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes of action. The Cornhuskers shot 47.5 percent from the field and outscored CU 46-16 in the paint.
Creighton shot a season-low 30.8 percent from the field and made just 10 of a school-record 40 three-point attempts from downtown. Farabello's 16 points came on 5-for-9 shooting from three-point range after the TCU transfer had started the season 5-for-25 from long-range.
