Men's Golf Finishes Fourth at BIG EAST Championship As Zielinski Takes Third

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- A 69 by Charlie Zielinski helped the sophomore finish in third place and the Creighton men's golf team in fourth place as play concluded on Wednesday at the BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP.
Zielinski's 69 was his third straight round under par and helped him finish in third place, four shots behind co-medalists Gregor Tait (Seton Hall) and Caleb Manuel (UConn). It was the Omaha native's team-best 13th round of par or better this season, which includes nine of his 15 circuits this spring. He now owns 10 straight rounds of 74 or better and has shot 79 or better in all 48 rounds of his Bluejay career. Zielinski birdied his final four holes and finished his sophomore season averaging 72.53 shots per round.
Junior Cade McCallum had his lowest round of the week with a final round 70 to climb into a tie for 24th place with a 221 total. McCallum finished his season with 10 rounds under par and a season scoring average of 74.17.
Senior Nate Vontz closed out his Bluejay career with a 1-over 73, placing 29th with a 223 total. In records dating to 2003-04, Vontz has played more career rounds (118) than any other Bluejay. His 71.93 scoring average led CU on the season for the program's lone two-time First Team All-BIG EAST selection.
After opening with back-to-back 77s, sophomore Jackson Thompson closed out play with a 77 to tie for 33rd place with a 225 total.
Rounding out CU's contingent was sophomore Shaun Campbell, who authored a round of 80 on Wednesday to tie for 35th with an overall score of 226.
Seton Hall shot a 10-under 278 on Wednesday to leapfrog from third to first place to win the BIG EAST team title with a 54-hole score of 849. That was three shots better than second round co-leader Marquette (852). UConn finished in third place with a 6-under total of 860, nine shots better than Creighton's 869.
In addition to Seton Hall qualifying or NCAA Regionals by virtue of its team title, Manuel also advanced via a playoff with Tait.
The event was held on the Mountain View course at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga., a par 72 course that measures 7,081 yards. The BIG EAST Championship field features 10 teams and 53 players overall.Â
The tournament was the final competition of the year for the Bluejay team.
