Men's and Women's Cross Country Finish Sixth and Seventh at the Augustana Twilight Meet

Bluejays open 2022 with evening race
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- In the first organized meet of the season the Creighton Men's Cross Country team took sixth, while the Bluejay women's squad finished seventh at the Augustana Twilight Meet on Friday, September 2.
As a team the Bluejay women's squad finished with 176 total points, led by Danielle Hotalling placing sixth with a time 17:55.34 on the 5K Yankton Trails course. It's the 22nd time in as many races that the senior has been CU's top finisher on the women's side. The four other remaining individuals to place for Creighton were Caroline Rupper (19th - 18:37.82), Morgan Koca (33rd - 18:55.96), Carly Manchester (67th - 19:32.18) and Anika Nettekoven (75th - 19:43.01) . It was the first race at the collegiate level for freshmen Rupper, Manchester and Nettekoven.
The women's race was won by Nebraska's Alea Hardie (17:00.07), who finished 30 seconds ahead of runner-up Leah Hansen of South Dakota State. SDSU won the women's race with a score of 84, 13 points better than Nebraska. The women's race featured 28 teams and 313 runners.
On the men's side Creighton placed sixth (of 32 teams) with a total of 221 points. Marcos Gonzalez led Creighton in the 4 mile race with a 17th place finish with a time of 19:50.01. The remaining four runners to place for the Bluejays were Michael Buckley (48th - 20:26.51), Eli Moore (49th - 20:26.66), Tommy Ward (53rd - 20:31.29) and Jake Ziebarth (68th - 20:41.50). Moore's top-50 finish came in his Bluejay debut.
South Dakota State cruised to the men's title with 24 team points, far ahead of host Augustana's 80. The Jackrabbits had the top three finishers, with Ben Olson (19:08.21), Daniel Burkhalter (19:17.92) and Josh Becker (19:19.72) pacing the field.
The two teams return to competition on Saturday, Sept. 17 in the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational, hosted by Nebraska at Mahoney Golf Course.
