Sophomore Eleanor Hudepohl wins for second time in last three tournaments
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Creighton's Eleanor Hudepohl overcame a two-stroke deficit on the back nine of the final round to win the Motor City Classic on Tuesday in Orlando, Fla. Hudepohl's one-stroke victory helped the Bluejay women's golf team to a second place finish in the team's first tournament of the spring.
A sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, Hudepohl had a three-round total of 223 to top the field of 36 golfers. She opened with a 1-under 71 on Sunday and followed it with a 78 in the second round to fall into a tie for third place, before a closing 74. She trailed Evansville's Allison Enchelmayer by two shots after 13 holes on Tuesday, then took advantage when the Purple Aces senior had three consecutive holes of bogey or worse. Hudepohl birdied the 17th hole, a par four measuring 322 yards, which proved to be the difference.
The victory was Hudepohl's second in her last three tournaments, having also won the Big O Classic at Oak Hills Country Club last October. She now owns a team-low 74.93 scoring average through 15 rounds this season.
Tying for fourth-place was Katherine Lemke, who compiled rounds of 76, 73 and 78 for a 227 total. The lefty now owns three top-five finishes in six events during her sophomore season, and seven times overall in her collegiate career.
Senior Katie Allen tied for 14th place with a 236 aggregate. She followed up her opening 82 that put her in 29th place with loops of 76 and 78 to rocket up the leaderboard.
Gabby Tremblay tied for 21st place after circuits of 79, 80 and 81, while Annika Yturralde had rounds of 80, 83 and 84 to tie for 30th place.
Competing as an individual but not factoring into the Bluejay team score was Mia Gaboriau. She had scores of 81, 76 and 78 to tie for 11th place.
Tournament host Oakland won the tournament by seven shots over Creighton with a 54-hole total of 917. It was Creighton's third straight runner-up finish dating to last fall.
Six teams competed in the event at Rio Pinar Country Club, which measured 6,049 yards on the par 72 layout.
The Bluejays return to the course on Feb. 20-21 at the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.
