Kiana Schmitt Hits .812 in Victory
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Middle blockers Kiana Schmitt and Ann Marie Remmes combined for 21 kills on 27 errorless swings as No. 14 Creighton swept High Point in a battle of conference champions at the Diet Coke Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. Scores of the Bluejay victory were 25-21, 25-12, 25-10.
Creighton is now 8-2 on the season while High Point dropped to 6-4. The Bluejays will face No. 9 Minnesota on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in search of a fourth tournament title as many weeks. The Gophers defeated High Point in four sets on Thursday evening.
"I thought games two and three were really clean performances offensively and with our first contacts against a very good team," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth.
The Bluejays hit a season-best .442 in the match, the eighth-best figure in program history, and the top performance since hitting .467 in a win over Seton Hall in 2019. Time after time, the Bluejays ran a slide to their middle blockers and repeatedly got the kill.
"I don't think there was any secret sauce at all," noted Booth. "We passed well enough that Kendra could create holes for them so that she had multiple options. I thought she mixed it up well so a lot of times the hitters were in a single block or at least a late-closing scenario. Kiana, Ann Marie and Ava (Martin) all did a nice job of hitting different areas of the court."
Schmitt terminated her first six swings of the night and finished with 13 kills on 16 swings. Her .812 hitting percentage ranks as the second-best figure in program history (min. 12 kills). The fifth-year senior had four kills in the first set, five more in the second set and four in the finale. Remmes hit .727 in 11 swings, tying her career-high with eight kills. Half of those kills came in the second set. The sophomore also added a pair of blocks.
Creighton finished the contest with 48 kills, four aces, 40 digs and five blocks on .442 hitting. Kendra Wait owned 33 assists and 10 digs while Ellie Bolton had 10 digs and dished six assists. Leading CU with 14 kills and hitting a robust .542 was sophomore Ava Martin, who had six kills in the first set and four more in each of the final two frames.
High Point ended with 20 kills, three aces, 25 digs, one block and hit .065. HPU setter Allie Gray, an Omaha native, led the Panthers with 15 assists. Dylan Maberry, who entered the day with a nation-leading 178 kills, had a season-low three kills on -.118 hitting in 17 swings.
The first set was the only close game of the night. Tied at 18-all, Creighton got back-to-back kills from Destiny Ndam-Simpson and Schmitt to take a lead it would not surrender. Consecutive kills by Martin pushed the advantage to 24-20, and Martin's sixth kill of the set gave CU the opener.
Creighton cruised to a 13-4 lead in the second set, hitting .517 in the process.
The third game followed a similar pattern. A 10-0 serving run from Sydney Breissinger put CU up 10-1, and the margin grew as large as 22-8. Senior Ellie Bichelmeyer's kill completed the sweep in the first meeting ever against High Point.
Creighton closes non-conference play on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. with a match at No. 9 Minnesota to conclude the Diet Coke Classic. That match will air on BTN+.
