OMAHA, Neb. -- Despite a strong effort offensively, the Creighton women's soccer team fell to #17 Georgetown, 1-0, at Morrison Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 24.
Creighton fell to 2-4-4 on the season following the loss and to 0-2-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Hoyas improved to 6-1-3 overall and 2-0-0 in conference action.
A defensive battle early saw Georgetown quickly take control late in the opening period as the Hoyas sent in the lone goal of the match in the 38th minute of play. A turnover in the Bluejays attacking third sent the play into motion as a long entry pass from Grace Sherman found Allie Winstanley at the top of Georgetown's 18-yard box. Winstanley then eluded a Creighton defender and slotted a shot into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Coming out of the break Creighton was the more aggressive team, outshooting Georgetown 9-2 in the second half. Junior Azumi Manriki and senior Maddie Radke had two dangerous scoring changes in the 54th minute, but both shots were blocked. Graduate Hitomi Yamaue also had a pair of scoring opportunities late in the second half that were also just off the mark.
Down to the final 10 minute of play, the Bluejays had one final push let in them. Creighton used a free kick in the 84th minute to record their most dangerous scoring chance. The designed set piece saw Manriki blast a shot towards the top right corner of the goal, but an amazing diving save by the reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, Allie Augur, kept Creighton off the scoreboard.
Creighton closed the match holding a 15-13 edge in shots, while both teams earned seven corner kicks. Making her second straight start, freshman Maddie Merrick recorded three saves in goal for the Bluejays.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 28 against Marquette inside Morrison Stadium at 6 p.m.
