OMAHA, Neb. - Powered by a pair of goals from senior Ariana Mondiri and a second half goal from freshman Anna Bragg, the Creighton Women's Soccer team delivered a 3-1 victory over DePaul on Sunday afternoon in the Bluejays 10th annual Pink Out match. With the win, the Bluejays took over sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST and recorded their third consecutive league win.
The victory lifted Creighton to 7-5-1 overall and 4-3-0 in BIG EAST play, while also improving to an impressive 5-1-1 inside Morrison Stadium this season. DePaul, however, dropped to 4-6-5 overall and 2-2-3 in league play with the loss.
Creighton stormed out of the gates as the more aggressive team, taking a 1-0 lead just 11 minutes into the contest behind the third goal of the season from Mondiri. Sent into motion by a picture-perfect cross into the box by senior Stella Downing, Mondiri headed in the Bluejays first goal of the match from just outside the six-yard box. Senior Maddie Radke was also credited with an assist on the play after playing a through ball down the sideline to Downing.
DePaul's Beth Smyth, however, would deliver an equalizer in the 44th minute as she hammered home a shot past the diving outstretched reach of Bluejay goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac to level the contest at 1-1 just before the break.
Coming out of the locker room tied at 1-all, the Bluejays quickly regained the lead on a second goal from Mondiri in the 48th minute. A blocked shot from sophomore Clara Kulick set up the goal as the rebound found the foot of Mondiri in the middle of the 18-yard box, where she blasted a shot into the back of the net to give Creighton a 2-1 lead.
Just over 20 minutes later, the Bluejays added an insurance goal and pushed their advantage out to 3-1 as Bragg delivered her second goal of the season in the 70th minute. Sophomore Anja Jestrovic played a ball through to Bragg on the edge of the 18-yard box, where she chipped a shot into the top left corner of the goal, giving the Jays a two-goal lead.
The Bluejays would battle defensively over the remainder of the match, holding DePaul shotless in the final 30 minutes to secure their fourth BIG EAST win of the season.
Creighton closed the match with a 19-4 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corners created, while Zalac needed just one save to record her sixth win of the season.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 24 as they travel east to face Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J., at 5 p.m. CT.
