Men Place Sixth; Women Eighth at BIG EAST Cross Country Championships

LEESBURG, Va. – The Creighton men's cross country team finished sixth and the women placed eighth at the 2024 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships, presented by JEEP and held at Morven Park in Leesburg, Va., on Friday morning.
"The BIG EAST is home to some of the best distance programs in the country," said Creighton head coach Chris Gannon. "You have to be at your absolute best, and we weren't our best today. Had some good things and areas we have to be better at in two weeks."
Jake Ziebarth finished the 8K course in 25:22.90, good for 29th place, as he topped the Bluejay men for the first time in his collegiate career. Ziebarth finished two spots and just over one second ahead of senior classmate Ryan Montera (25:24.01).
Marcos Gonzalez returned to the line-up with a 37th place showing (25:29.88), nearly a minute faster than his time at last year's league championship on a different course in Kenosha, Wis.
Rounding out CU's scoring contingent were junior Noah Jodon in 44th place (25:46.38) and Evan Kraus (25:57.55) in 49th place.
The Bluejay men had a team score of 169, finishing just five points behind Xavier in the battle for fifth place, and has now finished in the top six each of the past three seasons.
Villanova's Liam Murphy became the first back-to-back BIG EAST champion since the Wildcats' Patrick Tiernan won four straight titles from 2013-16. Murphy ran the 8K race in 23:12.83, which was almost 16 seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Marco Langon, who had a time of 23:28.27. They were supported by teammates Bailey Habler (23:58.35) who took fourth and Devon Comber (24:14.48) who finished 10th. Villanova (35) edged Butler (41) for first place in the team standings to win its second title in the last three years The Bulldogs had three runners in the top 10. The men's race featured nine teams and 86 runners.
Creighton's women turned in a third straight eighth place finish at the BIG EAST Championships with 244 points, 33 points behind Xavier.
Katherine Soule led the Bluejays for the third time in four races this fall, finishing 51st with a time of 22:35.22 to improve her position by 14 spots over last fall. She was part of a grouping of six Bluejays that finished within 40 seconds of each other.
Taylor Rorick (22:52.46) took 56th place, just ahead of Carly Manchester's (22:59.18) 59th place showing. Freshmen Alexis Leone (23:01.98) and Madeline Lage (23:03.85) rounded out CU's scorers and Anika Nettekoven (23:15.13) was close behind as the trio finished in 62nd, 65th and 69th places, respectively.
The Georgetown women edged runner-up Providence 42-43 with the help of three runners finishing in the top 10. Chloe Scrimgeour, last year's individual winner, took third place with a time of 19:53.12. Lucy Jenks (19:59.30) was fifth and Melissa Riggins (20:09.08) finished seventh. It was the fifth straight title for the Hoya women.
UConn's Chloe Thomas took first place individually winning by a comfortable 14.01 second edge over runner-up Alex Millard of Providence. Thomas covered the 6K run on the hilly course in 19:36.60. Millard paced three Friars in the top 10 with a time of 19:50.61. The other top PC performers were Kimberley May (20:00.65) who was sixth and Shannon Flockhart (20:13.83) who took eighth. The women's race included 11 teams and 99 runners.
