VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Creighton Track teams continued the early portion of their outdoor season with the USD Early Bird on Friday in Vermillion, S.D.
"We had some good performances today in Vermillion," said head coach Chris Gannon. "The conditions weren't ideal but we got some good work in and additional races under our belt. A lot of our athletes ran doubles and non-primary events as we set up for the back half of the season. Our men's and women's steeplechase crew debuted and put up some good early season performances as well."
The Bluejays had six men entered in the 800 meters, with Brian Hiltebrand's 1:52.56 setting a personal-best and earning him a third-place showing. Ryan Hendrickson ran a 1:55.18 in the same race to take ninth. Highlighting the women in the 800 was a ninth-place showing by Saige Christen (2:19.15), one spot better than Carly Manchester (2:19.21).
"Brian ran a fantastic 800, the second-fastest time in school history, and even more impressive considering the conditions," said Gannon.
Ryan Montera had CU's best finish, taking second in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:12.87. Morgan Koca led the CU women in the 5K with a time of 18:18.63 that landed her in fifth place, while Claire Pyne improved her time from last week by 11 seconds to finish seventh in 18:21.87.
Marcos Gonzalez finished third in the 3000 meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 9:32.81. That put him five seconds in front of freshman Evan Kraus (9:37.69), who was making his collegiate debut in the event. Scarlett Pearlman (11:29.32) and Katherine Soule (11:38.69) also competed in the 3000 meter steeplechase on the women's side, placing seventh and 11th, respectively.
In addition, Logan Piper ran a personal-best 56.97 in the 400 meter hurdles, which was good for 10th place.
The final event for Creighton was the 1,500 meters, where Siobhan Stoll led the Bluejay women with a time of 5:01.76, while Tommy Murray paced the men with a 4:02.88 clocking. Both races were popular, with the men's race featuring 111 competitors and the women's race 81 entrants spread out among multiple heats.
"We are looking forward to next week with a few athletes heading to California (for the Brian Clay Invitational) and the majority of the team heading to Wichita State (for the KT Woodman Classic/Shocker Pre-State Challenge)," noted Gannon.
