"Incredible national-caliber field at Gans today, with a lot of top teams from our region," said Creighton head coach Chris Gannon. "It was a good measuring stick for where we are and what we need to improve upon. We will get back to work with a training block before the October home meet and BIG EAST Championships."
Sophomore Tommy Murray finished 104th with a time of 24:39.2, a 47-second improvement over his time a year ago, and Noah Jodon ran to a 121st place showing in 24:44.0. Making his season-debut for the Jays was sophomore Evan Kraus, who took 149th in 24:58.3.
The Creighton men placed 18th against a loaded field. The men's race included 20 regionally-ranked squads, plus two others that were in the preseason rankings, among the 37 teams in the field. Creighton beat four of them (North Alabama, Abilene Christian, Baylor, UCLA).
Ranked 10th nationally, Stanford won the men's race with a team score of 31 to easily outpace Tennessee (163) and Auburn (167). Kentucky's Edward Bird was 23rd at the midpoint of the race but had a dynamic kick to win the race, which featured 327 runners. Bird's time of 23:07.6 made him two seconds faster than Stanford's Leo Young (23:08.9) as the top 15 finishers broke the previous course record.
Katherine Soule led the Creighton women for the second time this fall, placing 109th in 21:40.2 for the eighth-best 6K time in program history. The junior's time was 86 seconds faster than her clocking last year on the same course.
Carly Manchester ran a collegiate-best 22:16.7 to finish 171st in her first 6K race of the fall, nearly a minute faster than her time from the 2023 Gans Creek Classic.
Freshman Katie Roche (232nd; 22:54.9), sophomore Scarlett Pearlman (233rd; 22:55.0) and freshman Madeline Lage (240th; 23:00.4) rounded out CU's contributors to the team scoring. The women's race featured 327 runners overall.
Creighton's women placed 29th in the 38-team women's race with 872 points, which had 16 programs that are currently regionally-ranked, with three others who started the fall in the rankings. Four of the women's squads entered the week ranked in the Top 26 nationally. Stanford won the women's race with 44 points, well ahead of Tennessee's 92.
