Omaha, Neb.-- After a close battle, the Bluejays dropped a 3-1 decision during the 12th annual Socctoberfest match against No. 3 Denver on Friday, September 6. The loss moved Creighton to 2-1-2 while Denver climbed to 3-0-2.Â
Both squads began the match with defensive play until the Bluejays earned a dangerous scoring opportunity as sophomore Miguel Arilla was fouled outside the box which led to a free kick. Arilla served the ball into the front of the net, narrowly missing the head of sophomore Andrija Savic.Â
After the Pioneers dodged Creighton's push, Denver countered a minute later to seize the lead. The Pioneers tally came as Lukas Fisher pushed pace down the left side of the pitch, getting in front of the Creighton defense. Fisher found Ian Smith along the ride side of the box to draw Bluejay goalkeeper Blake Gillingham out for the stop. Smith slid a pass back to the middle to Sam Bassett, who punched home the first goal of the contest in the 33rd minute (32:57). Â
Denver continued its offensive push early in the second half when Bassett snuck the ball between two Creighton defenders to position Ian Welch to dart a shot to the bottom right of the goal, building the lead to 2-0.
In the 55th minute, Creighton earned another scoring opportunity as Gavrillo Sivric got loose in the right corner of the boc for a 1v1 battle with Denver netminder Issac Nehme. Savic window to score, however, was to narrow as Nehme made the narrow save. Â
The Pioneers tacked onto their lead when Bryce Willoughby headed in an insurance goal in the 68th minute. Defensive play quickly returned to the contest and the Pioneers were able to hold on to their lead despite the close margin in shots and corners.
Creighton got on the board in the 87th minute (86:47) as senior Jackson Castro took advantage of a Denver handball in the box, pushing in the penalty kick.
The Bluejays out shot Denver 10-6 in the contest and held a 4-0 edge on corners created.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Monday, September 9 in their first road contest of the season at Grand Canyon University with 9:00 p.m. (CT) start time in Phoenix, Ariz.Â
