#13 Volleyball Starts BIG EAST Play 10-0 After Sweep in Storrs

STORRS, Conn. -- Annalea Maeder had 24 assists, 10 digs and seven kills to lead the No. 13 Creighton Volleyball team to a 3-0 win at Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 25. The Bluejays hit a perfect 1.000 in the third set, terminating on all 15 swings.
Scores of Creighton's 12th straight win were 25-19, 25-22, 25-7. Creighton improved to 17-5 overall and is 10-0 in league play for the seventh time in the last 10 seasons, while UConn fell to 15-6 and 4-5 in BIG EAST play.
The match started with 16 straight sideouts before Creighton finally broke free. Trailing 10-9, the Bluejays scored four consecutive points on Sydney Breissinger's serve to prompt a Huskies timeout. Creighton used a 7-0 serving run on Abbey Hayes serve to open up a 21-15 advantage. The surge included Hayes' first two aces since the opening match of the season, as well as a pair of blocks from Nora Wurtz and Maeder. Creighton hit .379 in its 25-19 first set win as Maeder dished 11 assists and added five digs, two kills and two blocks.
An 8-2 run in the second set fueled Creighton to an 11-5 lead. The Bluejays led 24-17 and allowed five straight points before closing out the set on a kill from Kiara Reinhardt. The senior from Cedarburg, Wis., was one of five women with multiple kills in the second set.
CU raced to an 8-1 lead and were never threatened in the clincher, getting a kill from Jaya Johnson on match point. The Bluejays hit a perfect 1.000 in the third set, with a kill on all 15 swings. That included five swings rom Johnson, three each from Hayes, Ava Martin and Maeder and one kill by Reinhardt. UConn did not record a dig, ace or block in the finale.
Creighton owned nine aces and had 43 kills, 26 digs, four blocks and hit .408 for the match. Martin led CU with 11 kills and served up four aces, while Johnson contributed 10 kills.Â
The Huskies had 27 kills, 15 digs and four blocks on .195 hitting. UConn, which entered the contest second nationally in aces, had nine service errors and did not have an ace. Emma Werkmeister had 11 kills, but the BIG EAST ace leader sent four of her five serve attempts out of bounds.
The Bluejays are back home next weekend for a pair of matches, starting with Friday's 11:30 a.m. match against DePaul.
