• Creighton (3-3) closes its trip to the GEICO Players Era Men's Championship on Thursday, Nov. 27, with a 1 p.m. Central contest against Oregon (4-2).
The game will be at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. and be televised by truTV (Brandon Gaudin, Robbie Hummel, Jared Greenberg). It can be heard on 1620 The Zone (John Bishop), as well as a SiriusXM station 381 and https://sxm.app.link/SXM971. There will be live stats at Creighton.StatBroadcast.com.
• Oregon leads the all-time series against Creighton by a 3-2 count, though the teams have split two neutral-site contests.
Creighton's won the most recent meeting, an 86-73 double-overtime win in Pittsburgh in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on March 23, 2024. In that contest, Creighton trailed 62-58 with 27 seconds left in regulation before Baylor Scheierman tied the game with two free throws and a field goal. The Bluejays opened the second overtime with a 15-0 run, with a memorable tip dunk by then-freshman Jasen Green highlighting that spurt.
The teams squared off in the best-of-3 finals of the 2011 College Basketball Invitational. Creighton won Game 1 84-70 in Omaha before the series shifted to Eugene. The Ducks won game two 71-58, then won the title 71-69 on a basket by E.J. Singler with 2.0 seconds left after Creighton turned the ball over on a backcourt violation made possible by the non-existent half-court line on the Matthew Knight Arena floor.
That CBI final was the first season in Omaha for Greg McDermott and first in Eugene for former Creighton coach Dana Altman.
Prior to the 2011 CBI, Oregon won the only previous meeting with Creighton, 75-64 on Dec. 26, 1974 in Portland, Ore. The Ducks were ranked 19th at the time, and the contest was played as part of the Far West Classic.
• Greg McDermott is 2-2 against Oregon and 4-11 when coaching against Dana Altman. Altman is 2-2 against Creighton.
• Creighton looks to avoid its first three-game losing streak in non-conference play since dropping three consecutive games from Nov. 22-27, 2024, with the final two games in that streak coming in the Players Era Festival to San Diego State and No. 20 Texas A&M, respectively.
CU also lost six straight non-conference games from Nov. 23-Dec. 16, 2022, with the fourth and fifth games in that skid coming inside Michelob ULTRA Arena to BYU (83-80) and Arizona State (73-71).
• Greg McDermott's 353 wins at Creighton are the most in program history, just ahead of the 327 accrued by Dana Altman from 1994-2010 while patrolling the Bluejay sideline. They are more than double the next-closest CU coach in wins, as Arthur A. Schabinger had 165 victories from 1922-1935.
The only Power 5 schools to currently have a coach with 300+ wins at a school, whose predecessor also had 300+ wins at the same school, are Kansas (Roy Williams/Bill Self), Michigan State (Jud Heathcote/Tom Izzo) and Purdue (Gene Keady/Matt Painter).
Of the 53 head coaches hired in the 2010-11 offseason, McDermott and Altman are two of the eight men who are still in the same position. Altman's 374 victories lead that group, while McDermott's 10 NCAA trips are best among those hires. Other notable coaches hired that offseason still in their current roles are Tad Boyle (Colorado), Leon Rice (Boise State) and Brad Brownell (Clemson).
• Dana Altman isn't the only person on the Oregon sideline with Creighton ties.
Oregon assistant coach Brian Fish spent two seasons at Creighton as a film coordinator (1994-96) and six more years as an assistant coach (2004-10).
Oregon Director of Player Development Kevin McKenna was a 1998 inductee into the Creighton Hall of Fame as one of the top players in school history. He was an assistant at Creighton for nine seasons (1994-2001 and 2005-07). He earned his undergraduate degree from Creighton in 1993 and his Master's in 1997.
• Of its 54 all-time overtime wins, the 86-73 double-OT win over Oregon in the 2024 NCAA Tournament is Creighton's largest margin of victory ever.
- Greg McDermott talked in the off-season about how this year's squad figured to be the deepest team he's ever had at Creighton, and the early results have proven him right.
Creighton entered this season with 48 straight wins when scoring 17 or more bench points, but are just 3-3 this year despite scoring 18 points or more off the bench in all six contests to date.
Creighton's bench has outscored foes 163-137 this season. That +26 figure would be CU's best year-end mark since 2018-19.
Creighton's bench has accounted for 36.4 percent of CU's scoring, and 27.17 points per game. That's the most bench points per game since the 2014-15 club averaged 27.21 points per game. CU's best figure in the last 20 seasons came in 2007-08, when the Jays averaged 36.91 bench points per game and actually outscored the starting line-up (34.61 ppg.). That 2007-08 club was coached by current Oregon coach Dana Altman.
Altman's current team ranks 354th of 361 Division I squads with 13.67 bench points per game this year.
• Creighton has won 20 or more games in each of the past 10 seasons, tied for the nation's fourth-longest active streak. Kansas leads the way with 36, followed by Gonzaga (28) and Belmont (15). The others with 10 (like Creighton) include Oregon and Houston.
• On a national basis, the only teams with a top-25 win each of the previous 12 seasons (entering 2025-26) are Baylor, Creighton, Duke, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas Tech, Villanova, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Both Creighton and Oregon got votes in Monday's AP poll, but neither will be ranked on Thursday.
• In 1941, Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed a bill officially establishing Thanksgiving, to be held the fourth Thursday each November. And while Creighton has a lot of things to be thankful for, its record on Thanksgiving Day isn't one of them. The Bluejays are 1-3 all-time on Turkey Day.
CU's last game on Thanksgiving Day didn't go so well, losing 69-48 to Colorado State on Nov. 23, 2023 at the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City, Mo. That CU squad reached the Sweet 16 with thanks to an NCAA Tournament win vs. Oregon.
In 2019, the Bluejays fell 83-52 to San Diego State in Las Vegas. That CU team would go on to win a share of the BIG EAST regular-season title and finish the shortened-season No. 7 nationally.
In 2013 Creighton walloped Arizona State 88-60 in Fullerton, Calif., at the Wooden Legacy.
In 2009 Creighton lost 83-75 in overtime to Michigan at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla.
• Josh Dix grew up in the Omaha suburb of Council Bluffs, Iowa going to Creighton games, and the senior guard has begun to find his groove in Las Vegas. Dix has scored a team-leading 15.0 points per game in two games at the GEICO Players Era Men's Championship, while also dishing six assists in both games. It's the first time in his career he's registered six assists or more in consecutive games. Dix is 13-for-23 (.565) from the field inside Michelob ULTRA Arena this week.
The Iowa transfer scored 19 points against Oregon in a Big Ten battle last year.
• Speaking of Josh Dix, the senior owns 195 career assists and is five shy of 200. Dix has had back-to-back games with six helpers, the first time in his career he's done so, and in his career he owns an incredible 195/68 assist/turnover ratio (2.87).
• Creighton entered Tuesday's game vs. Iowa State with three players averaging in double-figures, but ISU's pesky defense handcuffed CU into a season-low 60 points.Â
Blake Harper entered the game averaging a team-best 12.2 points per game with Nik Graves not far behind at 11.0 points per game, but both men were held scoreless on combined 0-for-13 shooting. Graves had scored in 68 straight games dating to March 20, 2023. Harper had never scored fewer than seven points in 37 career collegiate contests.
Graves also was had his streak of 63 straight games with a made free throw snapped. It was tied with UC Davis' Ty Johnson (from Feb. 25, 2023 to Feb. 20, 2025) as the longest streak nationally since 2005-06.
• Nik Graves enters Thursday's game with 980 career points, with the first 925 of those coming at Charlotte. Graves owns 14 career games with 20 points or more.
• A season-ending foot injury to Jackson McAndrew has seen Jasen Green move into the starting line-up, and the junior from Omaha has delivered. In the two games in Las Vegas, Green owns a combined 24 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.
• Hudson Greer has his redshirt pulled last Wednesday against North Dakota, and it hasn't taken long for the Montverde Academy product to make an impact. Greer made 7-of-8 shots on Monday against Baylor while scoring 16 points, then followed it up with 12 points on 4-of-7 marksmanship against No. 15 Iowa State a day later. Greer has made 5-of-6 three-point attempts in Las Vegas this week, while the rest of the CU team has shot 16-for-51 from deep (31.4 percent).
On Thursday, Greer seeks to join Doug McDermott as the only Bluejay freshmen in the last 20 seasons with three straight games of 12 or more points in November.
• Isaac Traudt has scored 16 points in 24 minutes in Las Vegas, making 5-of-9 three-point shots.
Traudt is a career 39.6 percent shooter from three-point range, connecting on 72-of-182 tries from deep.
