Men’s Tennis Falls in Crosstown Showdown with Omaha, 4-3

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team secured the doubles point but couldn't hang on, dropping a 4-3 decision to Omaha in an intense crosstown battle on Saturday night at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The loss moves the Bluejays to 8-3 on the year, while the Mavericks improved to 4-5 overall. Five of the last six meetings between the Bluejays and Mavericks have resulted in 4-3 decisions, with Omaha coming out on top in four of the five matchups.
Creighton came out strong, securing the doubles point for the eighth straight match with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Junior's Zachary Kuo and Kirtan Patel teamed up for a 6-4 win on the No. 2 court, while junior Yuma Daijima and senior Blake Eason claimed an identical 6-4 victory on the No. 3 doubles court to clinch the first point of the match.
Following a loss at the top singles position, Creighton regained a 2-1 lead as Patel claimed a 6-2, 6-1 straight-sets win on the No. 3 singles court.
Omaha, however, responded with back-to-back victories at the No. 2 and No. 5 singles positions to take a 3-2 advantage in the match. UNO's Christian Trevey picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win on the No. 5 court, before Bryan Kuntz gave the Mavericks a 3-2 lead with a 6-2, 7-5 victory on the No. 2 singles court.
With the match coming down to the wire, Omaha's Pavan Uppu picked up a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-2 victory on the No. 6 singles court to clinch the match for the Mavericks.
Freshman Rocky McKenzie, however, closed out the match strong, delivering a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory on the No. 4 singles court, making the final score, 4-3, in favor of Omaha.
Creighton will return to the court on April 2, when they travel down I-80 to battle Nebraska in a Sunday doubleheader. First serves between the Bluejays and Huskers is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.
