CU leads the state's Division I Universities with nine perfect APR scores
OMAHA, Neb. -- Nine Creighton programs have been recognized by the NCAA for having perfect multi-year Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores in their respective sports. Creighton's men's cross country, men's golf, men's soccer, men's tennis, men's track, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's tennis and women's track teams each were honored.
Creighton's nine perfect scores led the state's Division I Universities and trailed only Villanova (12) among its BIG EAST peers. Among BIG EAST institutions, only Villanova owned a higher percentage of BIG EAST teams with a perfect APR score than Creighton's 60 percent.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams and measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term, providing a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. Each academic year, every Division I sports team's APR is calculated using a simple and consistent formula. Scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for staying on course for a degree in their chosen major and 1 point for being retained (or graduating) at the end of each academic term. For schools that do not offer athletics scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
This is the fourth consecutive year of publicly reported APRs after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the Division I board approved the release of APR scores but voted to continue the suspension of program penalties. Normal Academic Performance Program operations with program penalties and loss of access to postseason competition were originally scheduled to resume in spring 2024, but the Division I Committee on Academics decided not to enforce the loss of access to postseason competition for teams that scored lower than 930 last year, instead offering a conditional waiver due to lingering impacts of the pandemic. However, normal operations are being enforced this year for teams scoring below the 930 benchmark, with strategic penalties that encourage an emphasis and prioritization on academics.Â
The Academic Performance Program has established an essential framework for academic excellence. The program provides measurable goals to ensure schools are fulfilling their commitment of equipping student-athletes with the tools and resources necessary to achieve academic success. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic years.
Both the Creighton women's tennis and women's cross country teams earned a perfect rate for the 15th time in the 19-year history of the announcement of APR scores. it was the 13th consecutive perfect score for women's tennis and ninth in a row by the women's cross country team. Bluejay women's basketball was honored for the 13th overall time and 11th straight listing, while men's tennis and men's golf each picked up their fourth consecutive accolades. Men's cross country was recognized for the third season in a row and sixth time ever, while men's track and women's track both made the list for a third straight time. Men's soccer earned its second plaudit ever as a program, and first since 2010-11.

Dave Schnase, NCAA vice president of academic and membership affairs, said, "As the college athletics landscape continues to evolve, what remains unchanged is the academic success of student-athletes. We applaud the incredible academic achievements of hundreds of thousands of student-athletes and the support provided by their schools. We are committed to supporting the continued advancement of their academic success and athletic pursuits."
