Seven Bluejays recognized.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A program-record six members of the 2024-25 Creighton men's basketball team -- Steven Ashworth, Jasen Green, Ryan Kalkbrenner, Sami Osmani, Josh Townley-Thomas and Isaac Traudt -- have been named to National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court, while the Bluejay team also picked up an NABC Team Academic Excellence Award. Additionally, incoming student-athlete Josh Dix was also recognized for his success last academic year at Iowa.
Creighton's six NABC Honors Court members are its most since the introduction of the awards in 2006-07 after a previous-best four student-athletes were recognized in both 2010-11 and 2011-12.
This year marked the fourth straight NABC Honors Court recognition for Kalkbrenner, the third in a row for Osmani and the second straight honor for Ashworth. In recent months Ashworth was named a First Team Academic All-American by College Sports Communicators, while Kalkbrenner was tabbed Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the I-AAA Athletic Directors Association.
The NABC's academic awards are presented annually to teams and athletes from all levels of college basketball and recognize programs that completed the 2024-25 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NABC Honors Court, meanwhile, includes junior, senior and graduate student men's basketball players who finished the 2024-25 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. Over 2,400 players earned spots on the NABC Honors Court and nearly 400 programs received NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards for 2024-25.Â
"Education is one of the NABC's five core values, and we are proud to recognize the academic accomplishments of these programs and individual student-athletes across our sport," said NABC Executive Director Craig Robinson. "The dedication and hard work of these athletes, along with their coaches and support staff members who prioritize academic success, deserves to be widely celebrated."
In addition to the individual recognitions, the NABC also announced the 13th annual Team Academic Excellence Awards. These awards recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2024-25 season. To earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in the NCAA, NAIA and Two-Year Colleges must count the grade point averages of all men's student-athletes on the basketball roster during the 2024-25 season.Â
Creighton's 3.50 team GPA last spring was its best semester this century and made the Bluejays one of five BIG EAST teams to be recognized for 2024-25, joining Butler, DePaul, Marquette and Seton Hall.
The Bluejays are one of just 15 schools to earn an NABC Team Academic Excellence award in addition to being in the year-end USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll, joining Alabama, Arizona, BYU, Clemson, Duke, Houston, Iowa State, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Purdue, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
Coached by Greg McDermott, Creighton finished the 2024-25 season with a 25-11 record and placed second in the BIG EAST Conference. The Bluejays are one of four programs nationally to win an NCAA Tournament game each of the last five seasons.
