ASHLAND, Neb. -- Tommy Murray posted his second consecutive victory and Taylor Rorick her third straight Top 10 finish to lead the Creighton men's and women's cross country teams at the Platte River Rumble "Collegiate" on Friday afternoon at Olsson Cross Country Course in Ashland, Neb.
The Blluejay men finished in second of seven teams with 59 points, trailing only South Dakota State (26). Rogers State controlled the women's race with a team score of 16. South Dakota State (108) edged Creighton (109) by one point and Omaha (111) by three points in a tightly-contested battle for second place
Coming off a win at the Briar Cliff Invite two weeks ago, Murray picked up a second consecutive victory as he finished in 24:48.7. The senior was in seventh place after 1K, worked his way up to first place by the 5K mark. He slipped back to third at the 7K mark before a final kick pushed him past eventual runner-ups Sully Anez (24:54.2) and Dale Johnson (24.57.8) of South Dakota State on the challenging incline to close the race.
A.J. Abeyta placed sixth, clocking in with a time of 25:18.4. It was the freshman's second top 10 finish in as many races after missing the opening meet of the season.
Andrew Sauer ran to a 13th place finish with a 25:36.7 clocking, and Owen Marett wasn't far behind in 18th place with a time of 25:46.7. Rounding out CU's scorers was Lucas Bossinger in 22nd place (25:52.4). The men's race featured 100 entrants on the 8K course.
Rorick crossed the finish line in 22:41.9 as she finished in seventh in the women's race. Freshman Tatum Neilson continued her impressive start as she took 13th in 22:52.6.
Sophomores Sophia Redler (23:22.9) and Atlee Wallman (23:33.1) placed 24th and 28th, respectively. Additional Bluejays in the top 45 were junior Alexis Leone (23:53.4) in 43rd, one spot better than freshman Emma Vecchio (23:53.6).
Rogers State's Amy Morefield (21:57.0) outkicked teammate Amaya Grant (22:00.1) to win the 6K women's race, which included 102 participants. The meet was contested in 50 degree temperatures with winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour.
CU is off next weekend before heading to Mechanicsville, Va., for the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships Presented by JEEP on Oct. 30.
