Moraga, Calif. -- Despite back-to-back home runs in the second inning, Creighton Baseball dropped the opening game of a Saturday doubleheader with Saint Mary's 7-2 on February 14.Â
The loss evened the series with the Gaels, with the rubber game slated to begin at approximately 4:00 pm.
Down 1-0 entering the top of the second the tandem of Chris Baillargeon and Teddy Deters launched back-to-back home runs to give Creighton a 2-1 edge. The lead however was short lived as the Gaels answered with a run in the second to tie.
Saint Mary's plated four runs in the fifth and another in seventh to collect the opener on Saturday. Creighton's best chance to pull even saw Ben North foul off five pitches during a 10-pitch at-bat with the bases loaded, but he was retired via a ground out.
Sophomore Wilson Magers did not factor in the decision, leaving the game after four frames. Reliever Jimmy Burke took the loss (0-1), allowing four runs on four hits in one-third of an inning. Saint Mary's starter Cam Staton picked up the win (1-0), limiting Creighton to two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings.Â
Nate McHugh and Rocco Gump led the Creighton offense with two hits each, while Deters and Baillargeon provided the other two knocks for the Bluejays.
