ARLINGTON, Texas – The Creighton softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Wichita State during the second day of competition at the Boerner Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 21. The Shockers no-hit the Bluejays in an 8-0 run-rule victory in game one, before securing an 8-4 victory on a walk off grand slam in game two.
The two setbacks dropped the Bluejays to 5-9 on the year, while the Shockers improved to 7-5 overall with the two wins.
Game 1: Wichita State 8, Creighton 0 (6 inn.)
Wichita State was nearly flawless in the opener, holding the Jays hitless on the way to an 8-0 run-rule victory.
Scoreless after two, the Shockers opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning. Chloe Rhine put the Shockers on the scoreboard, blasting a solo shot to straight away centerfield to give WSU a 1-0 lead. Brookleyn Livanec and Ausha Moore followed with back-to-back walks before an RBI single from Gabby Scott pushed the Shockers advantage to 2-0.
Wichita State would add to its lead in the fifth as Moore walked and advanced to third on a double from Scott before coming in to score on an RBI fielder's choice from Johnna Schroeder to make it 3-0.
The Shockers seized control in the sixth, plating five runs on three hits, three walks, a hit batter and one Bluejay error. Trinity Allen extended WSU's lead to 4-0 with an RBI double to right center, before an RBI double and Bluejay error extended the advantage to 6-0. Kinzey Woody then delivered a two-run double down to left field line to secure the 8-0 victory for the Shockers.
Jada Sanders earned her first win of the season, striking out a career-high 10 batters in the complete-game no-hitter.
Game 2: Wichita State 8, Creighton 4
In game two, Wichita State jumped out to an early lead only to see the Jays stormed back to tie the game in the seventh before blasting a walk-off grand slam to earn an 8-4 victory.
The Shockers once again placed the first dent on the scoreboard, using a two-run homer from Jodie Epperson and an RBI groundout from Scott to take a 3-0 lead in the second.
Creighton answered in the top of the third as freshman Zoey Greenwood launched the first home run of her collegiate career to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Wichita State, however, countered with a solo shot of their own from Mackenzie Rooney to push the lead right back out to 4-1.
The Bluejays would not go down quietly, using a pair of singles from Avery Barnard and Chiqui Vazquez to put runners on first and second before Greenwood delivered an RBI single up the middle to cut the lead in half at 4-2.
Creighton then made it a one-run game in the top half of the sixth after Tara Vandewater doubled to right and came around to score on an RBI single from junior Avery Barnard to trim the Shockers lead to 4-3.
The Jays would then tie the game in the top of the seventh, using back-to-back singles from Lily West and Greenwood, as well as a WSU error to put runners on second and third with only one away. Junior Kaelan Schultz then delivered an RBI groundout to second to level the contest at 4-4.
Knotted at 4-all, Wichita State loaded the bases with a single from Scott, a sacrifice bunt and Bluejay error that allowed Schroeder to reach and a bunt single from Kammie Smith. Woody then unleashed on a 3-2 offering, blasting a walk-off grand slam to secure the 8-4 victory.
Greenwood paced the Bluejays offense with three hits and two RBI, while Barnard collected two additional hits against her former team. Freshman Audrey Gilman suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
Scott, Woody and Epperson each collected two hits for the Shockers, while Ryley Nihart secured her third win of the season after allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.
The Bluejays will wrap up the Boerner Invitational on Sunday when they take on host UT Arlington at 11:30 a.m.
