AMES, Iowa -- Creighton Indoor Track broke four school records on Friday at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa in its penultimate tune-up for the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championships at the end of the month.
"Had a really good day in Ames," said head coach Chris Gannon. "Four school records stand out but we had so many great performances today. It's a lot of fun to recap with (assistant coach Matthew)Â Fayers and just look at how far this program has come in only four years."
Logan Piper (400m), Jake Ziebarth (Mile), Noah Jodon (3000m) and Anika Nettekoven (800m) all established the fastest times in program history. Freshman Gabe Hamilton also eclipsed the fastest mark on record at CU, only to finish behind Piper in the 400.
Noah Jodon had CU's best finish of the day as the runner-up in the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:17.19. That was more than six seconds better than the mark previously set by Marcos Gonzalez (8:23.7). Jodon's teammate Eli Moore placed 10th in the event with a time of 8:42.66.
Ziebarth improved his own time in the mile, clocking 4:04.34 to surpass the record of 4:05.69 he set in December at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Ziebarth finished fourth in his race.
Both Piper (50.02) and Hamilton (50.63) beat Piper's previous record of 51.27 in the 400. Piper was 15th in the race and Hamilton took 24th.
Other top performers for the Bluejay men included Evan Kraus in the 800 (18th in 1:52.83), Andrew Sauer in the 5,000 (7th in 14:52.24) and the 4x400 relay team of Kraus, Brian Hiltebrand, Michael Bianco and Connor Nicholson (9th in 3:28.22).
Nettekoven smashed her own school-record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.04, erasing her time of 2:14.25 set last February at the Nebraska Tune-Up. Nettekoven finished in seventh place on Friday. She owns program records in the 600, 800, 1,000 and is also part of CU's 4x400 relay record effort.
The 5,000 meter race saw Kaylee Tobaben (3rd in 17:51.01) and Katherine Soule (4th in 18:00.00) post top-five finishes, while teammates Taylor Rorick (8th in 18:25.74) and Molly Rogers (9th in 18:32.35) also placed in the top 10.
Natalee Gehred paced CU in the 400 (22nd in 1:01.64), Reyna Heisserer (9th in 5:01.33) led the way in the mile and Scarlett Pearlman (19th in 11:01.99) was CU's top performer in the 3,000 meters. CU's 4x400 relay team of Gehred, Nettekoven, Carly Manchester and Sophia Valentine crossed the finish line in 4:04.43 to place ninth.
"We will evaluate a bit for what's next as we consider some opportunities for athletes to run fast, with three weeks until BIG EAST," noted Gannon. "We feel good with where we are and know there is some work to be done."
Creighton is back on the track on Feb. 20th with the Nebraska Tune-Up in Lincoln, Neb.
