WASHINGTON, D.C. – Knotted at 3-3 with one singles match remaining, senior Yuma Daijima rallied for a three-set victory on the No. 1 singles court to help the Creighton men's tennis team clinch a 4-3 victory over Georgetown on Tuesday morning in the BIG EAST opener.
The win propelled the Bluejays to 9-6 on the year and 1-0 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown fell to 1-11 overall and 0-1 in league action.
With the match level at 3-3 and the overall dual on the line, Daijima locked in and delivered a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 three-set win at the top spot to secure the Bluejays first win of the season.
The Bluejays got going early, clinching the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Seniors Kirtan Patel and Daijima teamed up for a 6-3 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, before senior Zachary Kuo and freshman Mathis Dahler clinched the first point of the match with a 6-2 triumph at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Georgetown leveled the contest quickly in singles play, with a 6-1, 6-4 win on the No. 3 singles court. Creighton would immediately respond with a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win from Jack McMahon on the No. 6 singles court before the Hoyas answered with a 7-5, 6-2 win at the N0. 5 singles spot to tie the match at 2-2.
Creighton would regain a 3-2 lead moments later when Dahler rallied from a one-set deficit to claim a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 three-set win on the No. 4 singles court.
Georgetown, however, would not go down quietly, capturing a 6-3, 6-7 (8-6), 6-3 three-set win at the No. 2 singles position to level the contest and set up the dramatic finish.
The Bluejays remain on the east coast and head to the Big Apple to take on Villanova on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. CT.
