Men’s Tennis Slips Up in 4-3 Setback at Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team fell to Omaha, 4-3, on Friday evening in front of a lively crown at the Miracle Hills Tennis Center.
The Bluejays dropped their season record to 10-8, while the Mavericks improved to 8-8 overall as an estimated 150 fans attended the dual between crosstown foes.
The Mavericks took the first point of the night with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Omaha's Ethan Gaubert and Bryan Kuntz picked up a 6-3 win at the No. 3 doubles spot, before Anthony Scheglowski and Liam Spiers claimed a 6-4 victory on the No. 2 doubles court to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Creighton's Yuma Daijima and Kirtan Patel were leading 4-3 at the top doubles position before the match went unfinished with UNO clinched the doubles point.
Omaha continued to surge in the early stages of singles play, claiming straight set victories on the No. 2 and No. 5 singles courts to grab a 3-0 advantage. Maddox Lundell recorded a 6-3, 6-4 straight-sets win at the No. 5 singles spot, before Spiers claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win on the No. 2 singles court.
Creighton would then get on the scoreboard for the first time as Daijima pulled out a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 three-set win at the top singles spot to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Omaha, however, answered with a 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-2 three-set win on the No. 6 singles court from Caleb Peterson to clinch the overall dual.
With the win already in the Mavericks hands, the Bluejays close the match with a pair of three-set wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions to close the final margin to 4-3.
Freshman Mathis Dahler rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 three-set win on the No. 4 singles court, while sophomore Rocky McKenzie battled Christian Trevey to a 6-4, 6-7 (9-11), 7-5 three-set victory at the No. 3 singles court.
Creighton will wrap up the home portion of the schedule on Saturday when they host Midland for Senior Day at the Koch Family Tennis Center at 3 p.m.
