Seven-Run Second Inning Lifts Creighton Baseball to 11-5 Win

Junior catcher Connor Capece got things started for the Bluejay offense with a solo home run over the left field wall. Chris Baillargeon and Rocco Gump followed with singles, then back-to-back walks made it 2-0. After an RBI grounder from Teddy Deters made it 3-0, the tandem of Ben North blasted a two-run single and Isaac Wachsmann lined a two-run double down the left field line to give Creighton a 7-0 advantage.Â
The Jackrabbits responded with a five-run fourth inning, keyed by a three-run triple from Nolan Grawe.
Creighton tacked on a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Capece lined an RBI single in the fourth, while Gump launched a two-run homer to right in the fifth and Joe Washburn lifted a sac fly in the sixth.
Reliever Evan Stratton picked up the win (2-0) with 3.2 frames of one-run ball. South Dakota State starter Jacob Sjuts took the loss (0-3), allowing three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.
The Bluejays return to action on Friday, March 27 as Creighton begins a three-game series with Sacramento State at 6:00 pm at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
