KEARNEY, Neb. -- A victory in the women's 4x400 relay and three top-four finishes in the men's 1,500 highlighted the Creighton Track teams at the Central Nebraska Challenge on Sunday at Kearney High School in Kearney, Neb.
"Solid opener for the squad," said head coach Chris Gannon. "Most of the team ran outside of their primary event as part of a bigger training block approach for the spring. We have had a really good training segment, so this was a fun way to cap that off and prep for the main part of the season ahead."
The Bluejay men had their best showing in the 1,500 meters as Noah Jodon (3:53.04), Eli Moore (4:04.95) and Dominic Ricci (4:06.50) claimed a 2-3-4 finish, with Jodon's performance also ranking as the second-best outdoor mark in program history.
Logan Piper placed sixth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.63, and Tommy Murray paced three Bluejays in the 800 with a 1:57.90 finish that was good for 16th place in the race.
The 4x400 relay team of Kyle Nelson, Piper, Michael Bianco and Connor Nicholson ran a school-record 3:21.41 that was good for fifth place.
On the women's side, the 4x400 relay quartet of Anika Nettekoven, Natalee Gehred, Carly Manchester and Alexis Huddin also set a school-record with a time of 3:56.34 to win the race. Six seconds back in 4:02.22 in third place was a Bluejay team consisting of Quinn Hays, Saige Christen, Sophia Valentine and Bella Gomez.
Sarah Vaske (4:53.42) and Taylor Rorick (4:55.31) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 1,500.
Other top finishers for the Bluejays included Gehred taking 11th in the 200 in a personal-best time of 26.04, Bella Gomez (2:26.32) coming in 10th in the 800 and Christen taking 17th in the 400 in 1:01.49.
Creighton is back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Husker Spring Kick-Off in Lincoln.
