Becker & Karmazin tie for 12th place
ELKHORN, Neb. -- Morgan Becker and Julia Karmazin tied for 12th place to lead four Creighton women's golfers in the top 20 at the Stampede at the Creek, which concluded on Tuesday.
Creighton finished fifth in the 10-team tournament with rounds of 308, 314 and 301 for a 923 total as the team battled windy, but sunny, conditions at The Club at Indian Creek in the western Omaha suburb of Elkhorn. The course played to a Par 72 layout and measured 6,119 yards.
Eight of Creighton's golfers improved their second round score from Monday in Tuesday's final round, while the ninth player matched her output.
Becker and Karmazin were CU's top performers throughout the tournament and on Tuesday. Becker shot scores of 77, 78 and 75 for her 230, while Becker fired loops of 77 and 79 on Monday before a team-low 74 on Tuesday.
Kayla Maletto (77-79-77) and Katharine Marshall (77-80-76) both compiled a 233 aggregate to tie for 19th place. It was Maletto's first career top 20 finish, while Marshall extended her streak of shooting a 76 or better to eight consecutive tournaments.
Madison Murnan (71-78-77=236) tied for 28th place and Karsen Morrison (83-85-76=244) tied for 41st place to round out the Bluejay scoring.
Competing as individuals and not factoring into CU's team score were Abby Aeschleman (85-79-78=242), Kinsley Smith (83-84-81=248) and Adysn Schachtel (86-86-86=258). Aeschleman placed 38th in the field of 71 participants after shooting 18 shots better than her performance in the same tournament a year ago. Smith placed 49th and Schachtel tied for 62nd in the first action in the spring for both women.
Drake (295-309-302=906) won the team title by four shots over tournament host Omaha (302-310-298=910) as the Bulldogs placed three golfers in the top 10. Omaha had the top two in the battle for medalist honors, as Katie Ruge (69-78-73=220) improved upon last year's runner-up finish by posting a three-shot win over teammate Emily Karmazin (77-77-69=223).
The Bluejays will close the regular-season on April 25-27 at the BIG EAST Championships Presented by JEEP in Callawassie, S.C.
