OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team hit three solo home runs and four doubles but came out on the wrong end of a 6-3 decision to DePaul on Saturday, May 2 at the Creighton Softball Stadium.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 28-25 overall and 16-7 in league play, while the Blue Demons improved to 20-29 overall and 8-15 in BIG EAST play. With Saturday's results around the league, Creighton has locked up the No. 3 seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament in Rosemont, Ill.
DePaul opened the scoring early, plating two runs on four straight hits to open the game. Alexis Hough doubled to center to leadoff the game and scored two pitches later on a single to short from Morgan Rogers and a Bluejay throwing error to take a 1-0 lead. Jolie Adams followed with a single to left before an RBI single from Chelsea Parker pushed the Blue Demons advantage to 2-0.
Creighton would respond with a solo homer to deep left center field from freshman Keegan Mayhue, her team-leading 12th home run of the season, to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the second.
The Bluejays then leveled the score at 2-2 in the home half of the third when senior Lily West blasted her fifth home run of the season over the left field wall.
DePaul, however, answered with an RBI double from Brooke Cwick in the top of the fourth and a pair of solo home runs from Rogers and Lydia Ettema in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
CU would cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run from Kaelan Schultz, but a solo homer from Parker in the seventh locked up the 6-3 victory or the Blue Demons.
The Jays tallied nine hits in the contest, led by West with two hits including a solo home run. Schultz and Vandewater also contributed two hits apiece, each collecting a double. Sophomore Landrie Harris (4-6) suffered the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in 3.0 innings of work.
Creighton and DePaul will wrap up the regular season and their three-game set on Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
