Morrison Wins Nebraska Women's Match Play Championship

YORK, Neb. -- Karsen Morrison, a rising senior on the Creighton women's golf team, won the Nebraska Women's Match Play Championship on Thursday morning at York Country Club in York, Neb. The North Platte native defeated Elly Honnens 3 & 1, becoming the first Bluejay champion in that prestigious event since Liz Morell in 2002.
Morrison never trailed in the match, as she birdied the opening hole to quickly take a 1-up lead. After Honnens tied the match on the third hole, Morrison heated up with victories on the fifth, seventh and eighth holes to go 3-up in the match. After Honnens won the ninth hole, Morrison took a 4-up advantage with five holes to play after winning the 11th and 13th holes.
Honnens extended the match with wins on the 14th and 15th holes, but Morrison closed out the victory with a par on the 17th hole for the 3 & 1 triumph.
Morrison qualified for the the match play after a first round 77 that put her as the 11th seed in the 32-woman bracket. She opened match play with 2 & 1 wins over 11th-seeded Sarah Lasso and sixth-seeded KayLynn Jorgensen to reach the quarterfinals. She needed 19 holes to oust Creighton teammate and third-seeded Madison Murnan -- overcoming an early 3-hole deficit -- , then knocked off 18th-seeded Katie Ruge 3 & 2 in the semi's to reach Thursday's final round.
The Nebraska Women's Match Play Championship is one of the premier events in the state, with their year being the 103rd edition of the event. Susan Marchese, sister of Morrison's coach at Creighton Debbie Conry, owns the all-time record with seven titles.
Morrison has been a fixture in the Bluejay lineup since her 2023 arrival on campus, playing in 29-of-30 collegiate events during her first three years at Creighton. Morrison opens her senior season with the Bluejays on Sept. 21-22 with the Yellowstone Intercollegiate in Bozeman, Mont.
