As he enters his third year on the Bluejay coaching staff, assistant coach Jalen Courtney-Williams looks to help the Bluejays build upon back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament and last year’s Elite Eight.
In his first months in Omaha, he helped sign a Creighton recruiting class regarded among the nation’s best, which included three members of the 2021-22 BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
With Courtney-Williams’ help, Ryan Kalkbrenner has ranked in the top-five nationally in field goal percentage while also being voted BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year each of the last two seasons.
Courtney-Williams was hired in the spring of 2021 after spending three years at McNeese State as an assistant coach under Heath Schroyer. Following the 2020-21 season he was promoted to associate head coach under new hire John Aiken before ultimately accepting the Creighton position.
While with the Cowboys, he coached some of the top big men in the Southland Conference and was recognized as a high-level recruiter.
Among his top performers were All-Southland performer Sha’Markus Kennedy, a 6-foot-8 forward who was also tabbed the 2020 Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and KeyShawn Feazell, who averaged 13.1 points and paced the Southland Conference with 9.9 rebounds per game in 2020-21. Feazell would play his final college season at Creighton.
Prior to his time in Lake Charles, Courtney-Williams spent three years on Ben Howland’s staff at Mississippi State, where he served as a graduate assistant and also as the team’s video
coordinator.
The Mississippi native played three seasons at LSU and spent two years at Morehead State, appearing in a total of 66 collegiate games. He earned his undergraduate degree from Morehead State in communications in 2015.
Courtney-Williams signed with LSU following a stellar prep career at Provine High School in Jackson, Mississippi. As a senior, he averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds en route to garnering All-State and All-Metro accolades while also being tabbed the Mississippi High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A McDonald’s All-American nominee, Courtney-Williams led the Rams to two 5A state titles as well as two runner-up finishes in his prep career.
He and his wife, La’Shya, have three daughters, Sevyn, Salem and Snoh.
